iphone chat apps/ free sms??

Basically, I have a friend over in the states and we want to keep in contact throughout the day. I have IM+ and skype on my iphone which both do skype but the skype ap doesnt do push from what I can see and the IM+ app isnt all that reliable.

What other options are there for free sms style chats?

Email isnt the same as quick txt messages and isnt as simple.
