IPHONE 4 question?

Hi guys I have just received my iPhone 4 direct from Apple. As this is a sim free model, does this mean i can use the virgin Sim I'm currently under contract with in my Iphone?

The Sim is a standard size one, but I have ordered a cutter to cut it down to the micro Sim card size. If I put this in my iPhone will it work as normal and keep my current phone number etc?

Also once my contract is up with Virgin, am I correct in thinking I can just swap this for say an Orange sim card?
