Possibly the wrong forum, but worth asking the question ... I may have the opportunity to visit the States over the next few weeks and was wondering if there were any issues with buying an iPad2 over there and then bringing it back to the UK ... mostly concerned with functionality as some friends have suggested that that are region specific, but I'm not convinced.

Is it more the issue of VAT/Duty and the plug?!

You are in theory liable for duty and VAT when you bring the US bought iPad back to the UK, you might also have warranty problems if it goes wrong.

One thing to remember is that often in USA, the initally quoted price excludes any sales tax, which varies from state to state, and it's not possible to reclaim this sales tax.

If you're going in few weeks there might be an IPad 3 announced by then

iPad 3 would be nice, but based on cost and what I'll use it for I think the 2 should be fine.

As long as it works it's financially better to risk the VAT, and amazon quotes prices inclusive of all taxes ... decision made! Thanks guys

In some states you can reclaim the sales tax (for a small admin fee at the airport)

The duty/tax allowance is currently £390 so if you can get your goods for less than that you don't have to become a smuggler

i got my ipad from canada the day it came out and paid £75 less than it was selling for here in the UK. Which was nice

I even kept the box.

Don't get the Verizon one if going for a 3G model, you need the AT&T one. Doesn't matter if you are getting wireless only.

I think Wifi will be fine but be careful around the 3G version - I have heard that they are not compatible here.

My 3G/wi-fi iPad 1 bought in the states worked fine with an O2 sim in it
