Hi

bought an iPad over weekend, says in the blurb you can send imessages over wifi. Ive registered my apple id on the pad and followed a website help guide but nothing. When I get a message only shows on my phone. When I go to send a message I have no contacts showing.
Anyone know what I need to do?

Thanks

Any other tips and advice on ipads welcome too. Presume I ought to get a screen protector and a case for it. One that props the pad up at an angle I think.

it only works from messages sent from an idevice. is the sender using an iphone/ipad?
Yes.

youll need to sync your contacts.
How do I do that?

Thanks.

Ive also got a chess game on my iphone, can I put that on the pad and synch up the progress of it do you know?

on an idevice you can message a phone number or an email address. If you message the phone number, it will only go to the phone, if you message the email address, it will go to both.

The message sent to the phone is sent to the iPhone mobile number so it will not show up on the iPad. If it's a 3g iPad the SIM will be a different number.
As said previously if the message is sent to an email address then it should show up on both devices.
Settings > iCloud > Contacts set to "On" to sync contacts from one device to the other.

On your iPad go to Settings, scroll down to Messages then on the right there is a field called "Send & Receive" if you select this it will take you to a screen that will allow you to add email addresses and phone numbers.

Sure about that? My sister doesn't have my email and her texts come though to my iPad too. I've got both email and phone ticked in settings.

Still havent managed to get messages or contacts working on the iPad.

Since I installed the chess game on the ipad, only the ipad picks up moves now as well, the game on my phone is stuck at about 3 weeks ago. Why?

And I thought Apple was supposed to be simple to set up!

May be something small, like are you signing in with the same Apple ID? (sorry, have to ask)

iPad can receive iPhone message. First make sure your iOS is up to date on all devices, then when you turn iMessage off and on, you should have the option to receive iMessages from the phone's number. Try toggle iPhone's iMessage first, then toggle iPad's.

For contacts, turn on contact syncing in iCloud for both devices, and they should appear on iPad. Forget syncing with the computer, as I've found if you let iCloud to take care of everything, it all just works.

For games sync, they only sync if they use iCloud. GTA3 only recently implemented iCloud saved game sync, if the game doesn't use iCloud for saved game, then you won't be able to go from one device to the other.

I only have one ID so yes I think so.

I am still on an old IOS on my phone so that could well be my problem. :$
oops.
Is it iOS 7 now?

Think Ive done this, i'll double check.

Ok thanks not sure how I'd check that.

Thanks again.

It's currently 6.1.3. I think started with iOS 6 that allows use of phone numbers IF only if you also have iPhone registered to imessage.

Ok thanks not sure how I'd check that.

To check which app uses iCloud do this: Settings -> iCLoud -> Storage and Backup -> Manage storage, you'll see the list of apps and their icloud data usage.

I think the cross device stuff are quite well integrated by Apple. I carry on iMessage conversations on my iPad when I get home. Contacts, calendar, reminders, notes and Emails are all synced. Photos gets around on all devices using photo stream. iBooks continue where I left off on either devices.

Only thing I don't like is that all photos gets uploaded. It'd be nice to not upload photos imported using camera connection kit.

This works, I just checked and didn't have a phone number option on the iPad. I logged out and back on the iphone and then on the iPad.

Once done the phone number option appeared on the iPad as well.

Updated iOS last night, iPhone and iPad now both iMessaging ok.

wuyanxu: went here : Settings -> iCLoud -> Storage and Backup -> Manage storage
on my iphone but "manage storage" was greyed out.

Cheers all!

Manage storage is greyed out if your phone can't connect to the internet.

My guess is that the chess game doesn't use iCloud. Perhaps find a new chess game?

End of the day, only apps that comes with Apple you can be 100% sure will work cross-device. All others are quite hit/miss.

I think it does work, think the person I play uses either iphone or ipad as and when.
