This might be a stupid question so apologies in advance if it is but does anyone know if it's possible to connect an external hard drive to an iPad using the camera connection kit?

I checked this out before I bought my iPad. The answer I got from the apple store is no. Even though You get a USB connection lead with it you can't attach anything but your camera or sd card. You can though connect it to a pc through iTunes and save your photos. Or if you have an online vault to could upload them via the Internet so you can access them anytime to get a wifi signal

I looked into this also. You can if your willing and able to jailbreak your iPad. Couple of guides online how to do it. The iPad won't provide enough power to power the drive so you need to use a split USB cable one plugs into the iPads USB adaptor the other into the iPad charger (provides the power). A couple off apps from cydia and your away.

Couple of points. You need the correct version of IOS to jailbreak newer versions takes a while to filter through and obviously this would be completely unsupported by apple so if you break it you could be in trouble. If your computer savvy it's easily doable but if you dont know a sata cable from an IDE cable I'd keep away. I had to restore mine when it went horribly wrong first time.

Excuse my lack off knowledge, but what does jailbreak mean ?

JB or jailbreaking is releasing the hardware from Apple's software restrictions and breaking free from jail....

It expands the feature set I guess and as mentioned above you need to ensure you are confident in the choice of software and method and also the results if it goes wrong.

I use

http://www.iclarified.com/tutorials/index.php

which has some great tutorials and I've JB'ed Ipads and Iphones 2g to 4 with this site. Just make sure you know what the consequences are and also it's not always best to update and JB the new updates if you do go down this route.

It's so dam frustrating that it's capable of using the technology and apple hold it back!!!!! Why do they do this??? Really not sure on the jail breaking though like you mentioned it could go wrong and I don't want that

The reason apple products work so smoothly is because they don't allow all and sundry to install software on them. If they did they'd be as unreliable as everyone else. They may have there limits they do what they do very well

Simply not true that. If apple allowed some of the jailbroken apps available in the app store user comments would put people off of bad/unstable apps. The eco system prevents bad apps not apple the only control they should have is that all apps have to be downloaded through the app store they shouldn't dictate.

As stated Jailbreak is completely reversible when you plug your phone/ipad into your computer itunes backs it up every time a simple restore in itunes will fix it.

Hmmmmm I'm still really not sure on the jail break really but on the other hand being able to plug in something that would give me loads more memory might be tempting!
