Hi all
due to having a work laptop, i only use my computer for editing and surfing the web. Therefore, I thought it would be a good idea to upgrade for more processing power and better screen resolution.

Before i do that, I thought I would get your views on if an ipad could do those 2 tasks sufficiently well, to replace a computer.

The benefit would would be mobility and flexibility, but i don't want to sacrifies editing ability.

Thanks in advance.

John

There are some editing programmes for the iPad but none would replace a computer IMO due to the cut down nature of the software.

Looks like a laptop upgrade then.

thanks

...and the interface. How can you do precise editing, other than global adjustments, without at least a mouse?

I don't know much about the iPad but you can do a fair bit of photo processing on an Android tablet. I use Photoshop Touch for layered/masked editing; AfterFocus for depth-of-field stuff; Touch Retouch for smart retouching like Photoshop's content-aware fill) though PS Touch also has this capability; and PixlrExpress and Snapseed for basic tonality and colour edits plus filters, borders, etc.

I know Snapseed is available for the iPad but you'd have to check the others if you're interested. Ideally, you'd want a 10" tablet but I've had fairly good results using my Nexus 7.

While I prefer using my Wacom tablet, Lightroom, Elements, and various plugins on my PC, I'd happily do basic photo processing on a tablet while on the road.

Since I was sitting in a wifi-enabled cafe browsing the forums with my N7, I thought I
would show you what I mean. I took this photo a while ago with my Samsung Galaxy S2 smartphone, which has an 8MP sensor. I just spent half an hour running it through PS Touch to get rid of a bit of wall sticking out, a large piece of driftwood in the water, and a couple of other distractions; then I ran it through Snapseed to do some cropping, some tone and colour edits, and a bit of sharpening; then into PixlrExpress to add a border. The resulting file is 2448x1836 pixels, though I linked to the 800 pixel wide version here, and it has a file size of 2.54 MB

I don't know how well you can see the quality of it as I can only see it on my tablet at the moment:

It's great at surfing the web, not so good at post editing. Until I can run LR on a tablet I won't be using it for editing.

Microsoft Surface Pro. Runs the full fat version of Lightroom. i7 processor, Windows 8... it's basically a fully functional PC in a tablet.

You still have the issue of a crap interface for editing though... although, unlike the iPad, it has a proper USB socket so you can plug a mouse into it easily. Although.. once you start doing that, you may as well just use a laptop.

Im not advising you use an Ipad for editing but you can use the exact same magic mouse I use with my MacBook with an Ipad.

Guys
From your feedback and speaking to various shop assistants, it would seem that a tablet can be useful for basic editing, but not in depth.

A lot more expensive, but probably more appropriate, is a Mac book. I'm told that the picture resolution cannot be matched by a by the standard laptop/pc.

Thanks for all your advice
