All,

I have just bought an IPAD and I'm really keen to use it with my photography. Have any of you gained from using such an accessory? Clearly it has benefits when showing pictures to clients when you are out of the office but there must be others out there.

incidentally, I'm doing a charity ball in October and keen to use thE IPAD there if it can give me any advantage.

Any help would be appreciated,

Matt

I'm not entirely sure what your question actually is. iPads are useful beyond photography, but is that what you're asking about?

And why is this NSFW?

NSFW?????

I too, would love to know why there is such a hype about an iPad (or an iPhone for that matter. I am due an iphone on my contract, but the sales guy in the shop, after nearly 2 hours, suggested I would be better sticking with my old one. I couldn't work it!)

You could always use it to wedge a wobbly tripod.

Beyond using it show clients your shots, not much. Unless you have a wireless transmitter on the camera that sends the shots to the ipad so the client can pick it up after the shoot, choose the shot they want and then send it via wifi to the printer

I don't understand the hype either. It's a giant smartphone that you can't make calls on?

You are doing this the wrong way round. You've bought the device to solve a problem thy you don't have. Instead if you had a problem that needed solving with an iPad it might make more sense.

It would be like buying a 300mm prime and then asking what you can take photos of.

Personally I don't see much of a use in the general photography view. I guess if you have a break in an on-location photoshoot you could load the pictures on the iPad and check them on a bigger screen, and maybe see if the model(s) are happy with the way things are going?

Apart from that, I can't really see much more of a use for taking photos?..

Yeah, from a photography perspective the iPad isn't necessarily all at useful. Sure, I have a nifty ephemeris on mine, as well as Snapseed which is useful for some quick post, but mostly my iPad is for other stuff like iBooks, games, web, email, watching TV and videos, etc.

Thanks for your feedback everyone.

The background to my question was based upon looking for new ways of doing things and looking for any potential efficiencies at the same time.

I'm happy with my workflow but didn't want to get too complacent.

I've been on motorcycle track days where the photographer has set up a few PCs for people to view their photos on before committing to a purchase and that appeared to be pretty successful.

Bit of history; in ye olden dayes, if you wanted pics from a track day you'd speak to the photographer in the morning and pay your money, then you'd get your pictures in the post later. I got stung by this at Donington when I paid £25 for 5 pictures taken from the same spot, 3 of which were out of focus. Being taken from the same spot on the same corner, there's very little to tell the shots apart as I'm doing exactly the same thing in all of them. Complete waste of money.

Your charity ball could be an excellent opportunity to show pics to potential purchasers on the night, while they're still buzzing with the fun of the event rather than a few days later when you put them online and people have sobered up ;)

We've used ours at nursery shoots to upload the photos taken to show to parents straight away. I also use in the studio with an app called Sort Shots linked to an HDTV. We show the customer a slideshow of their images then go through them one by one and rate them 1 to 5. We go through the fours to see if there is anything we could do to make them a 5 for them then we show them the ones they've chosen as 5's and hopefully sell them lots of photographs. :)

When I shoot rugby matches I shoot small jpeg and raw then upload the small jpegs to iPad. That generated lots of interest and I give out cards leading to sales.

Currently sat in Barbados airport and iPads were the device of choice on this years holidays. Everyone seemed to be playing on them or watching movies on the plane, then using them for Internet when here.

I use an iPad in the following ways..

1. I have my portfolio on there so that whenever I'm at a meeting I can show examples of my images. This has worked well on many occasions, and especially when I've been shooting one genre and been asked about the possibility of shooting another.

2. When shooting corporate events I shoot wirelessly to the iPad so that clients / guests can see their images straight away.

3. When shooting on location we always shoot wirelessly back to the iPad so that we can review the images after each test.

For me, it's an essential tool and I wouldn't be without it.

the most fascinating thing though is why people who have zero interest in a device take the time to read a thread someone has put on about it, and then take the time to comment.

That's what really baffles me. I mean I have no interest in a kindle whatsoever, so if anyone puts a thread up about a kindle. I won't even click on the thread let alone comment on it.

To those of you who have no interest in the device, what made you even read the thread let alone comment?

Keep puffing and inflating yours!

I actually do have an interest - my wife has been issued an i-pad2 by her employer and I would love to find out how it could be made more useful than my netbook without spending money on something that isn't hers

well, then my question wasn't directed at you. I'm asking the people who don't have an interest, why do they read and post?

and to answer your question - the ipad won't do anything more useful to what your netbook can do. It just might make the experience more enjoyable whilst it is doing the things it does - but if it's not to your taste, then it might not. Horses for courses!

a spoon and a fork both can be used for eating rice crispies. It's just that one is more awkward than the other. However, if you also want to eat chips - then the fork might be your best choice.

Fingers are best for chips!
BTW, how long are i-pad screens good for - the one SHE has is only a couple of months old and looks decidedly worn - probably because she has to type on it. then, she has to e-mail the resulting document to herself to be able to print it. there are a couple of things about it that I like - as with most Apple stuff, it looks great and also, when e-mailing, there's a dedicated @ key rather than shifting an apostrophe. The flippy rubbery lid is quite cool too but I've always preferred function over form.

well, i've had mine a year and it gets daily abuse from my daughter who is 2 and son who is 8 months, so has drool, smudge, food and snot on it. It's still as good as new. Maybe yours is faulty?

Have you tried wiping it? That usually sorts it out. A bit of windolene does the trick.

Also, why is she emailing her document to print? Why doesn't she just print from the ipad?

I think there's an image thing to consider too. Say you're at a corporate event; a tablet is simply a better presentation device as there's no keyboard to hold on to, people can pass them around, etc.

Personally I'd go for an alternative to the iPad such as the BlackBerry tablet though, I think they have better functionality as a netbook replacement device.

It's a tool in so many ways, some photo related, many just a general tool.

Speed of access to data. Fastest laptop would take half a minute to turn on from sleep. ipad takes a second.

Longer battery life

I use it for brainstorming, drawing out plans when out and about. OK, I could do it on a notepad, but I sometimes send the ideas electronically to either myself or to clients/other creatives.

Organise calender during a meeting, synced straight away with other devices, inc phones and home computer for my immediate contacts to see.

It's my scrapbook for ideas.

In a pinch, it makes for a decent enough P&S camera/video - better than my old phone!

It's also used to watch TV in bed, or news feed while working. Its uses are endless.

Can everyone stop bickering please. Going to have to clean this up when there's a really good argument going on somewhere else :(

looks well worn all over the virtual keys and only a month or 2 old. maybe she should throw it back at the IT dept...

Not mine(or even hers, so unwilling to try anything chemical on it...)

Also, why is she emailing her document to print? Why doesn't she just print from the ipad?

Mainly because the stupid thing doesn't have any port on it into which a printer can be plugged - yes, she could buy an extra for it but why should she have to to make something work usefully?

It's glass. How can it be "worn" are you sure this is an ipad we're talking about?

Not mine(or even hers, so unwilling to try anything chemical on it...)

just wipe it with a cloth then. It's just smudges, a damp cloth will do it, it's just a glass front, hell use spit if you want!

she doesn't need an extra port or to buy anything, you can print from it natively. I think you guys should spend some time learning how to actually use it.

I thought it just supports printers with airprint support, which isn't a big list

http://www.apple.com/uk/ipad/features/airprint.html

no you can print to any networked printer, theres a plethora of apps that do this.

I guess when I used the term native that would imply only with airprint, but what I mean is you don't have to buy any hardware to do it with a normal networked printer, as the advert says "there's an app for that!"

sounds to me though that nods wife is trying to put a square peg in a round hole. If I needed to do extensive typing and printing I wouldn't be using an ipad for that kind of job. It's like she's trying to eat chips with a spoon as my analogy above :)

It would help if there was a manual of any sort in the box - I ain't psychic!

And yes, it's a real bag of schy Apple poo. Her own netbook is much better, even if it does run Linux - at least she can get files off it to use on other machines when she needs to.

She may have a screen protector stuck on which will make cleaning less worrying and might explain the scratchedness.

I reckon Strappy has it right when he/she says it's an image thing.

you keep messing up your quote tags!

apple like to be green and not print manuals that nobody ever reads, all the manuals etc are online

sounds like it must be a screen protector on it with the scratches etc

square peg, round hole i'm afraid.

And I would love to shove the square peg up its designer's round hole!

I'm a firm believer in paper manuals - nice to be able to refer to it when needed. I could even cope with just a CD/DVD full of PDF but even that seems to be beyond them (and I do take the point about greenness.)

Oh, and congratulations on being able to read the part of my post that tells you about the screen protector.

Strappy ... he/she ...
He. :)

Not to mention that it saves them a huge amount of money in printing and shipping costs, though I'm sure that's just a happy coincidence. ;)

I'm with Nod on manuals, it's always good to have something material to flick through. These days you're lucky if you get a book describing the warranty in 96 languages. Kids today, don't know they're born, it was all fields around here, had to be fields, we'd cut all the forests down to make paper for manuals ... think I got a bit off track there.

Can I ask what apps you use for this? I havw the Phot Connection Kit and always import my photos onto the iPad while I'm away, and that's fine for me to look through but when showing people I find that I'd like to be able to quickly select and show them just a few of the best images. However, unless I delete them I can't do that in the Photo's app, and haven't yet found any other apps to do that either. Would appreciate thoughts if there is a good method of filtering photos for preview.

Cheers,

David

Joe, what app do you use for this? Printing to my networked printer might be useful (although haven't found a need yet)

As for manuals, I've just bought a canon d10 as a compact camera. The box was filled with useless paperwork in languages I can't read.

Whilst I'm not a great fan of online manuals, the first time you connect to iTunes I seem to remember it points you at the manual. I think the problem with iPhones/iPads is that they appear easy to use, so people don't bother reading manuals.

One advantage I find useful is the photographers contract maker app. It allows you to type up your own contracts and import the clients info from your address book and they can sign it just like they were signing a paper document. When that's done a copy of the contract is sent to their email and yours. :)

my wife has taken my ipad so I can't be sure the exact name, I think it was just called print to all.

just type in "print" in the app store. there are tons of apps to choose from.

Oh, and congratulations on being able to read the part of my post that tells you about the screen protector.

congratulations on being rude and sarcastic, people like you make this forum such a nice place to be ::thumbsdown:

if you weren't so busy being a smartarse you'd see that i was just agreeing with you about why you are seeing scratches.

Joe & Nod, will you please both step away from this thread and take a breath. If you want to continue bickering then do it on MSN!

Cheers - I'll look it up. The thing with Apps is that there can be lots to do the same thing, not all good (although making apple money) and I'd rather go with one thats recommended.
