Basic question really. Which should I invest in, an iPad 2 or a HP Touchpad?

I have never owned an Apple product and never really bought in to the Apple hype but I am very tempted by an iPad 2. What's putting me off is the lack of flash support and the bloody awkward way in which apple products restrict file importing and exporting from external devices.

I know iPad users will recommend the iPad and HP users recommend the HP but I would like a reasonable objective comparison if possible.

Hi Rob I have the ipad 2 that I find amazing. My main reason was to use as a portable portfolio viewer. I found an app called Xtrafolio. The combination is great. I do all my editing and then load pictures to Ipad 2. The screen resolution is amazing and you can set music/tunes to your slide show. Every presentation I have done since has brought a wow comment form customers. Cant comment on the HP pad as I have never used one. Uploading is not a problem once you know how, it took me an hour to figure out with the help of some youtube vid`s then it all came clear.

Its all to do with sync. Xtrafolio then lets you cue pictures into there own folders and you can ad headings txt etc,. Watch a youtube vid on xtrafolio and see how it works.

Another question for you Dave. If you shoot RAW + JPG and hook the camera up to the iPad can you transfer just the jpg files over without the raw files?

If you take RAW only photos, and upload them to the iPad then it will load and display the photos just fine.

Hope you dont mind me asking a question Rob , do you need a camera connector or is it usb, as Im also thinking of getting one but no idea really

I don't want to transfer RAW files over as I'm planning on getting a 16Gb iPad and don't want it full of RAW files. Basic jpg would be fine for while I'm out and about. I'll save the RAW files for when I get home.

To connect a camera to iPad you need a camera connection kit which is basically a usb bolt on that plugs in to the charger/data slot.

Thanks Rob I had heard you may need a camera connection but was unsure as Ive never had any apple prods, buying an Ipad is a minefield to me thanks for your reply

I shoot in RAW on my A850 always do post editing then save as JPG for my portfolio views. The camera connection kit works fine. I believe you can load RAW files but I always save as jpg for xtrafolio. I believe Kris loads RAW and he has no issues.

Don't own either so hopefully i can comment objectively.

The ipad looks cool, and is very clever - very appleish and classic Jobs of locking it all down so owners cannot do anything with it.
I think I would find the limited capacity on them frustrating and then there's the no SD card, no anything to plug in, unless you buy buy buy extras. I think for me, I want one, but cannot justify having one, esp as my phone has a 5.3" display, (perfect for travelling on public transport and keeping myself entertained when the great unwashed public bore me senseless) and then we have a netbook, laptop and desktop etc.

HP Touchpad - don't think i have ever seen one but a quick visit to amazon and i think it looks similar to an ipad but significantly cheaper. I assume it can support flash, but again nothing to connect anything to such as a mouse or SD card, which I think would annoy me before long. i am guessing by being android as well, it's probably a lot simpler and less restrictive in adding music files etc without having to convert to some format in the
apple store..... i tunes or whatever......

So my conclusion is, the touchpad appears to be on average about £100-£130 cheaper compared to similar ipad, so more oomph for less cash..... but the ipad does look lovely.

Given ipad 3 is about to hit us soon (and the screen is supposed to blow the 2 out of the water, and i assume the touchpad) , I don't know if apple will be shifting all the ipads 2 cheaply..... Just a thought?

Thanks for your input Lynton. One thing I haven't had a chance to do yet is to have a play with a Touchpad. I have only briefly played with an iPad for about 10 minutes and it was very easy to work out how to use it.

Another question for someone, if the HP Touchpad is running Android, is it easy and free to update it to the latest version as and when they are released?

As long as android is compatible (i.e size wise) it will be fine assuming my android phone is anything to go by.

Posted from my iPad with the TP app!.....

Can i ask why you are considering the hp, the best android tablet would have to be the asus transformer, which also comes with a keyboard with usb slots and also a sd card reader, you also dont need iTunes just to put music on the tablet.
P.s. typing this from my asus transformer:-)

Any HP touchpad would have to be second hand, I'm pretty sure you won't find a new one anywhere.

That said I've got one and I reckon it's the bees knees, I hardly ever use WebOS now that I've got Android on it. Although ICS on the TP is nowhere near a finished product (and probably never will be) I find it very useable.
For myself, the next tablet I buy will have 3G and will be 10" with Android, apart from that I'm not fussed.

To answer your question about upgrading Android on the TP, yes it's very easy.

The asus and Samsung galaxy tab are regarded as the best android tablets out there.

Opening statement says about lack of flash and awkwardness of file transfer both of which are no problem on android, as for RAW files personally ive never tried and am not sure, but id be surprised if there was not an app to support it.

I admit to being an Apple fan but I very rarely come across sites that won't load on the iPad. For me its not an issue. I am not bothered by the whole 'Apple locking things down' as I just like to turn it on and use it, and not have to faff around with things. I do know that the vast majority of tablets out there are iPads! Screen and battery are excellent.

Regarding pics I only use iPad to view on, and not to import or edit as would always use the laptop for that. 16gb is not a lot of memory, typically films (have mainly kids ones like Cars) are 1.5GB, some apps can be 1gb too, although most are much smaller.

Neither of which should be an issue on the iPad, all of the big players have no flash alternatives (so should everyone really, otherwise that's a lot of traffic down the pan). File transfer again no problem, as I said it doesn't need to be via iTunes if the file format allows via certain apps etc

Horses for courses :)
