Intro to b&w film processing meet up.

I met up with Shane @southernjessie this morning to collect some film and we got talking about b&w film processing, Shane was saying he'd like to have a go but would like to have a go first.

So do the good folk of f&c think there enough interest on the forum to run an introduction to b&w film processing day?

I'm only thinking of basic traditional b&w film processing, not printing but could probably bring some scanners along so we could see the whole process through.
I do know someone with a neg dryer so getting stuff dev'd, dried and scanned should be doable in a day.

We'd have to find somewhere to hold it and gather together some kit for people to use but I'd be happy to bring some of my kit along.

It also needs to be somewhere accessible.
 
Not surprisingly I would definitely be interested in this. Even though I do already process my own it would be good to see how other people do it. Could we find somewhere in the middle of the country, perhaps Brumingham, to hold it?
I could bring dark bag, maybe even some chems, tanks, spirals etc.

Yep, I'm in, happy to bring along a selection of clothes pegs that can be used to hang up films for drying. There's 3 or 4 different colours so everyone can have a choice.

Oh, I can also bring changing bag, two-spool tank (35mm), chems, etc. and my scanner, though my laptop went to silicon heaven a while ago so I won't have anything to plug it into.
 
I'd be interested if it's not too far. Birmingham area sounds good.

Would be happy to bring tank, chems, scanner and laptop.
 
Sounds like fun, I'll probably not make it unless Edinburgh or the Lothian's suddenly become accessible :)

On the plus side no worries about me passing on my bad habits!!

I would definitely be interested in this, but I don't have and wouldn't have access to a darkroom at home. The best I could do is to use a dark bag, so if the process could be done in this way (more primitive, I know!) that would be useful.

I have no idea about processing so I would also make notes of each stage in the process, which products/brands to use and where to get them from. Heck I might even record the whole thing if it were done in a normal room (with lighting) but using a dark bag.

Somewhere in central London would be best if during the week or if a weekend then SE London or Surrey should be ok.

Dark bags are absolutely fine for getting your films in the tank. You don't need a darkroom until you start printing.

Agreed, that was the idea when I had the quick chat with SJ this morning, home dev'ing as cheap and cheerful as possible.

Changing bag, tank + spiral, thermometer, Poundland measuring jugs and chems, probably Rodinal as it's perfect if you're not going to be processing every week.
 
Right, this is a bit mental but I'm going to run it up the flagpole and see if anyone salutes.

What about a proper F&C studio day, hire models perhaps, few demos of cameras large and small and all things inbetween, how to develop and print your own negs, that sort of thing?
I'm not for a moment suggesting we do it next week but it might be possible to hire a studio/large room and get a few dozen of us together next year sometime. Might attract a few of the Modernii Digitalis folks along if we advertise it on the general forum.
Maybe get a few of the better togs to have a little display of their work to show how good film can be?

Just a thought, maybe the ramblings of a beautiful but damaged mind....:wacky:
 
Me and @retrogamer1990 would be happy to host it in the shop or find somewhere in the Corn Ex to host it, while it's a bit out of the way for most I just thought I'd put it out there as an option to consider :) we always have darkbags & tanks in stock too to demo with and for people to try it out.

I'd be happy to help out if one were run in Leeds
 
I think this is something to look at for those dark days of winter and if there's enough interest we might have to create some sort of North/South divide :D
