Intervalometer shooting?

Im thinking of doing some Astro photography for the meteor showers and Milky way etc. Im going to use the in-built intervalometer of my Nikon D500. Is it correct that the duration of the the interval has to take into consideration, the shutter speed?
So, if i take a 15sec shot, i need to set the intervals at more than 15 secs?
And even more if i have NR enabled?
What do people advise for the interval for a 15 sec shot?

Hi Jason - I used to shoot a lot of star trails (similar in principle to what you are doing) and I just put the shutter on continuous with NR off and shot a sequence of shots with no breaks (at least there's no risk of missing anything doing it this way!)
