Be gratefull if someone could help with this.

Running two PC’s.

No1 has Windows 7 and connects to the internet (Virgin) via a Netgear router (supplied by Virgin some time ago) and an ethernet lead.

No2 has WXP and connects to the internet via a Thomson Speedtouch modem.

Only got one phone line therefore I can either have the lead to the modem or the lead to the router connected.
Ideally I would like both PC’s to connect via the router (only one would be connected to the internet at a time) to avoid the need to plug and unplug phone leads.

I thought it would take no more than connecting a second ethernet lead from the router (it has 4 ethernet ports) to PC No2. Tried it and it does not work – failed to connect.

Could the problem be that the modem linked No2 PC has Virgin software on it (was used to set up the internet connection many moons ago) and expects to see a modem connection and nothing else.

I don’t want to install the Virgin software without being certain that will cure the problem since the CD to reinstall it has gone walkabouts.

Getting waylaid by other events in the house just now - visitors turned up.

Does it matter if I run the command ipconfig/all with the pc's connected to the internet or not.

Got the results on both screens (there is much more of it on W7 pc).

Cannot see how to copy and paste the info. R/click brings up a select option, but no copy command so it will mean a fair bit of typing.

I'll catch you tomorrow with this if you don't mind.

Do it on both Win7 and XP machine when they are connected to the router via cable.

You can either use the Mark right click option to mark an area of text or select all. Then right click copy and paste on here.
 
You can tell the command prompt window to 'mark' the selection by clicking on the very top left of the title bar and selecting Edit > Mark. Then mark with your mouse what you want to copy, and you can then copy it.
 
Might be worth disabling any security/firewall software on PC2 and trying again.

Seems the problem is rather basic - ethernet lead. Changed the lead to No2 pc and got a connection.
