Hi, I'm after my first indoor studio for portraits, has anyone had any experience with the Interfit EX150 starter kit ? I currently use my canon ex580 and a sigma flash with diffusers!

Thanks

Lee

they're *****, no power, crap recycle, horrible build and not a standard fitment, but they're cheap - you pays your money, you takes your choices

I'd recomend looking at mid-low range lights like the elemental genesis series, as these tend to be properly built take s fit mods (not all do but the mods are cheap and generic) tend to be fairly powerful (below 300ws you're better off with a speedlight tbh) and have a better recycle

Thanks for your advice , looks like I'd be better off getting 2 x lighting stands a soft box, umbrella and maybe cheap radio triggers (unless I can make use the IR wireless triggering, not sure if they'd work with a speedlite inside a softbox ?) and utilise the two speedlites I have ! ?

I got rid of mine because the output was never the same from one shot to the next & the ready beep was loud enough to wake the dead, oh, & for some reason they wouldn't work on min output ( that may have been just mine though ). I now use lencarta smartflash with no probs.

depends on what you want to be shoooting, mini studio stuff then studio heads are the best because portability just isn't important, for a flexible approach I find speedlights in valuable.....

I have a couple of the mk1s kicking around and they are fine. You get what you pay for but I have to say that these have lasted numerous trips in the car without a problem (cursed myself now). Recycle time may not be the quickest on the block but how often do you want to shoot that quickly. Mine work on minimum power no problem.

There are a number of systems that would be much much better than those.. I nearly got those for my first lights and so glad I didn't. Think about the future a bit too and the way the light modifyers attach.

There are far better build qualities out there and I agree with David about the interfit.

Check out the Lencarta Smartflash kit, Bowens S-fit and well made. great customer service too.

thanks for all you input, Rough Edges which of the Lencarta starter kit would you recommend?

Also Jessops are currently offering the EX150 as a bundle price of £199 with the interfit 32" 5 in 1 reflector.

I have to agree with Rough Edges here.
I'm looking in to getting a small portable studio sorted out, and the Lencarta kits get decent reviews, especially for the price.

I was going to get the Interfit ex150 but have changed my mind and will be going for the Lencarta Smartflash. Especially since they have Bowens S-fit mounting things

So what's the best kit?

1) 2 x Umbrellas
2) 1 x Umbrella & 1 x Softbox
3) 2 x Softboxes
4) Any of the above with background & support system

Cheers

Have calculated the kit savings, from there individual prices

1) 2 x Umbrella kit - Saving £42
2) 1 x Umbrella 1 softbox - Saving £98
3) 2 x softboxes - Saving £183

There's no saving when adding background & support to kit.

So looks like option 3 is the best "Value for money" kit.

Personally one softbox/1 umbrella is what I would go for. Well worth the extra £100 or so. The Lencarta also comes with the radio triggers too... Very useful. Add the BG support and a BG and you are all set...

I recently purchased the 3 head elemental genesis mk11 kit, very well built and s-fit aswell so lots of modifier's to choose from, i opted for 2x 250w heads and a 400w head, 1x softbox and 1x octobox 1x umbrella, the kit comes with loads of gear, spill kits, wireless triggers, stands,5 in 1 reflector and a huge padded case to keep in all in which i think is a massive bonus, to be honest i havent used it much yet as ive been so busy at work, i will try and get some pics of the actual kit to show you........But i have to say big thumbs up to elemental for the quality kit....

I ended up getting the Lencarta kit with twin 85cm softbox's, thanks Garry Edwards for your help today even though in the end I went with the 85cm softbox's instead of 60cm :-), can't wait for kit to arrive ! Hope I don't regret it !

Congratulations. I am sure you will be very pleased. One thing for me was the quality feel to the power output control.. Not present on the interfits...

There is no other excitement then unpacking the kit..

I have the Safari by the way and chuffed with it..

A pleasure to help.. When I first started on the looking at lighting path, I looked at the interfit.. instantly thought is was poor... Just felt cheap. i am sure you have had your hands on a set in jessops for example...

They were recommended to me and nearly bought the Smartflash, but I don't have the space for mains lights.. So held off when at Focus on imaging earlier this year..

But I felt the kit offered far more than the price would suggest and what some others were offering.
