Right I am insured as a student with Endsleigh and am very happy with them (had to use them once)

Since i took out the policy I have changed my kit. With them i have insured a 400d and kit and a tamron zoom, they swapped the 400 and kit for a 450 and kit so i assume that has been changed. I have bought a 430exII an 80-200f2.8L a 50mm f1.8 and begun to use an old 35-105 f3.5-4.5.

I need to amend my policy but how do i go about it, the flash is easy as it was bought new and can be insured for its new price as can the nifty. The other lenses are the problem, do I insure them for replacement costs (70-200f2.8L and what? - a 24-105 f4L?) which are far more then my purchase cost (the 35-105 i basically inherited with a film body i intend to learn at some point).

Also is the 24-105L a direct replacement for a 35-105? I can't really see anything else canon make overlapping like that

I am confused and worried about all this as i don't want to have a problem and my bought new kit to be sorted and left with a mess for my most frequently used lens (i shoot sport for the student paper)

Any and all help appreciated, also I am not sure if this should be in business or general photography instead so if it's wrong would a mod please fix it.

If your policy is a replacment policy (new for old) then you need to insure for the cost of replacing the item with the closest available model. Usually it would be pretty straight forward to find which model has replaced a lens in the line-up.

If your policy is not a replacement one, then you have insure for the value the items have now, harder to do.

Generally, I think it's best to avoid policies where you have to specify every item like this, but sometimes, e.g. when you're a student, it's hard to avoid. Have you checked your parents' home contents cover? They're policy's 'temporary accommodation away from the home' section may be enough cover for you, even as a student. You may need to list your address but your mum or dad should call their insurer to see if it's possible.

I checked the home policy when i started uni and it wouldn't cover my camera kit, and surely if I don't list it I have no proof I ever had some of the stuff if I get robbed/mugged

You don't have to list it, all kinds of things can act as proof of ownership such as:
  • Reciepts
  • Boxes/packaging
  • User manual
  • Photos
  • Valuations
  • Exif data
  • Bank/credit card statements showing purchase
  • Proof of registration with manufacturer

Think about, simply listing something doesn't prove you own it, so your insurer will expect proof of ownership even if you've specified it.
