Hello there,

Apologies if this is the wrong section to post this sort of related thread..

I am looking into travel insurance for when i go to india next month. I want to bring my Samyung 8mm fisheye and was just curious if anyone had any links for cheap but effective lens cover?
I have found coverage for about £100 that covers all of my other belongings but this lens is slightly more expensive. (Around £300 when purchased about 2 years ago)

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

:)

Have you gone direct or through a broker? - I always go through a broker now because it's easier to get the cover I need.

Through a broker? I have found an insurance via a comparison website which seems pretty decent. Maximum coverage of up to £300 for an item. I was just curious if anyone had any photographic equipment specific insurance? thanks for ya help :)

I think adding £7.5k worth of camera equipment cost me an extra £40 on my usual travel insurance. It wasnt that much more as we only planned a couple of foreign trips this year and I was told my kit was small fry compad to medical expenses.

A comparison website is limited by the situations it's pre-programmed with, it's like using your camera in programme mode and hoping the manufacturer included a "white cat snowboarding on a foggy day" programme. They're also motivated to point towards the underwriters that are paying to be on the comparison list in the first place. A broker is still working under commission from the underwriter, but they can be more flexible when listening to what you need (which hasn't always been what I thought I wanted). I've used Wye Insurance as my insurance broker for years, and when I compare them to the direct/comparison websites they're deals are very good - either cheaper than direct/comparison or no more expensive but with better cover. Plus, I'm always forgetting renewal dates and they're very good at sending me a reminder alongside a breakdown of the two or three best renewal options and a recommendation as to which to take.

If you have household contents insurance it's usually relatively inexpensive to include it on that. All my photographic equipment is insured that way.

But that might not cover you for a trip to India.. ..

I was in India a year last December with all my gear and I was covered.

In the last three months I've used it beyond the Arctic Circle, beyond the Antarctic Circle, and on the Equator and it was covered.

You just need to add cover for it being away from home.

If you already have cover, how much does it cover? It will list a cash value, and if it already mentions cameras then you're covered. If the £300 lens is the most valuable photography item you have you'll have no problem getting adequate cover, and will certainly be for more than a few hundred quid. Isn't the camera already worth more than the lens?

I'm taking minimal camera equipment.. simply my Canon A1, both 50mm and 28mm lens and about 10 rolls of film. however, my friend who i am meeting will be using his canon DSLR for snaps, so i thought bringing my 8mm fisheye would be cool for him to use..
