Looking into getting photographer insurance, and was wondering where I stood on 2nd hand equipment. I recently purchased my 50D via TP and obviously I do not have the original purchase reciept.

So if ever I needed to make a claim, most claim forms ask for the reciept or proof of purchase. Do photoguard, adduki, etc cover 2nd hand equipment?

Has anyone made a successful claim without proof of purchase?

Any advise would be appreciated

There should be no problem insuring used gear

A reciept or proof of purchase does not have to be a retail reciept - just proving you did purchase that camera or are the owner should be enough. I keep a photo of the item showing the serial number personally.

Best bet is speak with the insurance company to double check.

Aaduki cover it as long as you email them the serial number of the kit to insure (and the replacement value) - I've sent them an excel spreadsheet of my kit that I've bought 2nd hand.

I'm soon to be testing their insurance too, as I've got a broken camera here to get fixed

When I had a claim on some photography gear via my household insurance they received (and accepted) a printout of an eBay / Paypal receipt, a flash manual and a scan of a s/h shop invoice as proof of ownership of three of the items!

What I should do is get a shot of each item inc it's s/n on record, but it's all to easy to put off doing so for another day...:shake:

The outcome of this would be good to hear.....You always hear about the the service received when buying insurance, but rarely about when making a claim

Thank you for all the advice, I just spoke to photoguard directly and they said they would except a photo with a newspaper date in frame of the equipment as proof of ownership.

Hope this thread helps other people in the same situation as me :)

Agree with you Vishal, be nice to hear how a claim get dealt with, keep us posted Matt

Unless a policy specifically states what is required, all of the below will serve as proof of ownership:

  • Photographs of the items (no newspaper required)
  • User manual
  • Original packaging
  • Receipt/invoice naming the item
  • Credit card statement showing the purchase
  • Sending the Insurers details of the item/s prior to the incident e.g. lisitng all your kit with seriel numbers.
  • Proof of registration with the manufacturer for warranty or a service such as Nikon Professional (be wary of raising questions of whether you are a pro or not though if you are and haven't declared it)
  • Digital files containing Exif data showing the item
  • A letter of confirmation from the shop/person you bought it from

That's just off the top of my head and there will be more than that. The best way is to list your kit and take down serial numbers where possible and send them through to the insurers. That way they have them to hand should anything happen.

Edit: I should add, make sure that you get a new for old policy, anything else isn't worth having especially for kit you bought 2nd hand, and unless you are a pro your household insurer will more than likely be your best bet, including public liability which you'll already be covered for.
