Does anyone (non-business use) insure their equipment. I have recently purchased a lens that I could not really afford to replace and wondered if insurance would be a good idea and who other amateur photographers go with?

I have Gadget insurance with my bank account as a pack which I used to have my camera equipment listed alongside my laptop, tablet and mobile phone but they have recently stopped having photographic equipment on the policies.

You have the option of insurance via home insurance or have a look at eversure:

I tried specific photographic insurance for a couple of years as it offered better cover than my home insurance which limited total value and excluded theft from hotel rooms, cars etc. Not cheap.

I then changed my house insurance providers and they offered the same cover as the specific insurance for no extra cost.

The impact of a claim on your house insurance premium needs to be considered.

I also have all my gear ( specified ) in my house contents insurance- No brainer really, to pay a few £1,000 for gear and NOT insure it, just asking for problems

Anyone have experience with photoGuard? I notice you can get £24 cashback through them.

We have M&S - not sure what it is called - it enables me to take any amount of kit anywhere which is going to be really handy with no foreign travel allowed and the car being the main way to get to places. I spoke with one specialist at the photoshow a couple of years ago and was put off by having to be in physical contact with my kit at all times - that was either Aaduki or Photoguard - not sure which. It also depends how much kit you have - some will ask you to list every item and have a limit to the quantity they are prepared to insure - and some won't allow you to leave anything out of sight in the car. I was with Hiscocks for a year once but then they whacked up premiums across the board - not just mine for getting a payout from the UK CEO after they messed me about with an accidental damage claim. One chap on line said this his premium went up by 70%. We think they were trying to discourage the un-rich from being their customers. It certainly worked! :D

I have used them in the past and they were great when my lens fell off the front of my camera whilst on holiday (don't ask, must have not fully clicked the lens in place). That was a £1k claim and they paid for a new lens with no problems at all. That was in 2011 though (time flies!) so not sure if they're still good.

My issue with camera insurance is it usually doesn't include theft from a motor vehicle - and that is when it's most likely to be stolen.

I've only ever broken 2 pieces of camera gear - once was a 18-200 superzoom which cost less than the premium would - and the other when I dropped a D800 and myself into Loch Achray (which I dried out and it worked for 5 further years and has been rehomed). The premiums in that time would have cost over £3000 - money I've saved an invested into a second Pentax 645z.

Unless I shot coastal - which kills camera's - I simply don't need it

I have my camera equipment on my home insurance. Doesn't cost much. The real question is would they actually payout when I dump $2000 of camera equipment into the river when I slip.

I'm also covered via household insurance - under all risks, new for old. As already mentioned, you do need to check individual item limits (this varies from policy to policy), and cover (or rather, restrictions on cover) when in car, hotel rooms, etc.

I have taken out a PhotoGuard policy just for my most expensive and brand new lens at just £5.50 a month. I couldn't add my camera body or other 2 lens as they are over 3 years old.

I use eversure. Bit nervous of having to make any claim on house contents lest they hike the premiums way up.

For me, its £131 for 6k of equipment at risk ( eg away from the house ) - incl 60 days worldwide and includes accidental damage and theft from a vehicle, Its amateur only - no sale of photos etc allowed - which suits me fine ( but they do pro policies ). I was near to claiming a few years ago when my PL 100-400 mount failed and the seller was messing me around about the warranty but I hit them with a Paypal claim and got my money back.

Maybe I'll review next year and see if I can sort out a contents insurance which isnt going to hammer me if i need to claim.

Whether its by house contents or other insurance, for me, I find I am no longer bothered about the risk of taking whatever stuff I want out with me but this does NOT mean that I don't take care of it,
