I've got my mums netbook with me thats need a os installed on it. I was going to try linux ubuntu or mint. I've followed there instructions to create a flash stick bootable iso but can't get it to work. Does anyone know another way? If i can't put linix on there windows will do, can i just do a windows reinstall without a cd drive?

have you checked the original OS isn't on a partition?

where exactly are you going wrong with the Ubuntu USB install? you can make a bootable Windows USB but if something isn't working with the Ubuntu one you might hit the same problem so lets try to work that one out..

failing all that get an external drive as I don't think you can hook up optical drives from another windows/linux computer like you can with macs

Have you enabled boot from other devices in the bios
Whether you can boot to optical USB hdd or any drive is down to the mobo not the OS.
Get in your bios and check your settings

Can't you get hold of an external CD drive to use? It's much simpler and easier to do than messing about with a USB drive.

When I first bought a laptop without an optical drive my first accessory was an external DVD writer, it cost £20 and has proven its worth over and over since then.

I have a external hd but would i need it formated?

I also have a desktop cd drive somewhere would it have a slot to wire it in?

I've gone into the bios to change boot preference, the flash is in the list but nothing happens when i confirm i want to boot from it then windows loads as usual.
