Starting to get ridiculous...... waking up middle of night at approx 02:30 for no apparent reason.....each and every night then can't get back to sleep:(......doesn't matter what time I go to bed at I still seem to wake .... unless I take a lot of booze then it's not sleep but an induced coma ;)

Waking up at that time then being active for a few hours and going back to sleep again is apparently cave man hours and that's how humans used to be. If you wake up. Get up and do stuff. The more you let it bother you the harder it will be just to doze off.

Regular meal times and not drinking too much booze also help massively.

There is a herb called Valerian which is quite good for helping sleep. Doesn't make you groggy like a lot of these things. I used to use it when I had insomnia.

sleep deprivation is horrendous .hope it settles down and you get back on track soon. ( try not to go down the booze route it will only make it worse )

+1 for regular meal times. Also do you exercise? Even moderate exercise, should help you sleep. Try magnesium and zinc capsules (sometimes called ZMA). They will help give you a deep REM sleep. Even if you don't get many hours sleep it should give you a deep well rested sleep.

I eat regular, do a lot of walking no stress in life at moment just bloody insomnia.....Maybe will get up and do stuff and go back to bed later

Don't fight it, just sleep when you can...I have for 20 years. Get up do something to occupy your mind, laying in bed cursing won't do didly just exacerbate the problem even more.
I can get along fine on 4-5 hours sleep some nights half of that. Sure it is not the ideal way to function I've adapted to it as fighting insomnia is futile believe me I've tried.

I take it you have a clock facing your bed,OP?

No clock.....I eventually get up and go check the phone.

Well, that rules one thing out.
Turning a clock to face away from you sometimes solves the problem.

I've read about the two sleep period theory too (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-16964783)

Apparently before the industrial revolution, clocks and artificial lighting, it was common place to go to bed during the evening, sleep to 1am-2am, spend a couple of hours awake and then sleep till morning.

It would seem that the introduction of clocks and artificial light put an end to this and we were all forced to have one long sleep and wake up at a specific time.

Doctors even said that the best time to conceive was in the period between the two sleeps

I slept through to 7 an this morning but I didn't go to bed until 2.....

Sleep has always been a little problematical for me too.

As a kid/teenager I always had problems with sleep walking/talking. When I was with my first "proper" girlfriend I woke up having *private time* with her (it was 9 years later when it came up in conversation I admitted I was asleep during most of it  )

When I moved out of home for the first time to live with my fiancee (I was around 27), nocturnal activities were extremely disruptive but pretty much stopped when I separated from her 18 months after we were married (I guess deep down I always suspected I couldn't trust her and the stress of that subconsciously affected me).

In the last 5 or so years there's only been a few disturbances but they do normally coincide with stressful times/experiences.

Other than that I'm a pretty light sleeper, if something disturbs me during the night I find it very difficult to go back to sleep. I received a call out from work at 02:50 once, didn't have to do anything as I shouldn't have been called in the first place but I didn't manage to go back to sleep.

For the past year or so I find I'm unable to sleep much past my "normal" waking time (around 05:50) at weekends no matter what time I go to bed. The only exception being where I get to the point where I'm totally exhausted literally crash.

My wife's expecting our first child in July...... the sleepless nights is what I'm going to struggle the most with as I probably regress to being a baby when I'm sleep deprived

Anyway..... the one thing I keep reading about sleep problems is to try (as hard as it might be) not to stress about it. For example, if you wake up at 2am and keep thinking "I've got to go to sleep, I need to be up at xx:xxam" you're just likely to stress yourself out to the point where you'll be too stressed to sleep. Although I have to admit I find it nigh on impossible to do.

I think I will cost myself with before bed baby oil tonight....apparently I'd to help you sleep ;)

I usually only get 2-2 1/2 hours of good sleep a night. I do doze off a bit after that but that's not refreshing at all so doesn't really help. I'm taking tablets for a back problem and the dose I take before going to bed should put me out for the whole night but it falls short by a mile. I have a Kindle Fire electronic book so I usually read that till I drop off again so I don't disturb the wife, but occasionally I get up and come downstarirs and go on the computer (usually on here) then crash on the sofa eventually. I've spoken to the doctor and there's little they can do, short of more medication, and they're not prepared to give me anything long term so I guess it's something I'll have to put up with. Thankfully I don't work anymore, due to the back complaint, so it's not a massive problem for me to have a nap in the afternoon if necessary but I could imagine it playing havoc with a working person.

Milk is good to help you sleep either warm or not .... there is some enzyme or something in it that helps you sleep (look at babies)

Just close your eyes!

Tryptophan. It's also in bananas. Banana smoothie before bed should knock most people out :)
