I'm thinking of having my old 350D converted to infrared. Is there anything I should know? Who does the conversion best (or are they all the same?), and what can I expect in terms of differences in operation of the camera, if any?

Galaxy66 has helped me with gaining some insight IR, I'm sure he'll be along soon ;)

I've purchased a Panny G1 to get converted, looking at ACS to do the conversion, not cheap. The other company is ProTechRepairs.

You say not cheap but what prices are we talking?

There's a Fuji S6500fd for sale in the classifieds at the moment. I tried a friends with a B+W 093 a few years back, it was capable of hand-held shots and the EVF was perfectly usable in sunny conditions.

I had my 300d converted last year with ACS, you're looking at around £300-£350. It's worth it though if you like IR photography. Check out my pics with my IR camera here

Under no circumstances use ProTechRepairs

I sent them a brand new Nikon D40 to convert and they fried the mainboard and proceeded to fob me off for several weeks until they finally came clean and offered to replace it.

When they did it was with a camera that had done over 3000 actuations, which they claimed WEX had sold them as new. A quick call to WEX confirmed the camera as a faulty customer return that had been sold cheaply to PTR.

In addition to this there was dust on the sensor, under the filter, suggesting that they don't have the necessary clean-room facilities to undertake such specialist work.

In the end I got my money back, but the saving of a few quid over what ACS charge wasn't worth the hassle.

I'm looking at ACS as a result of this and the experience that Galaxy66 had too. Also they took ages to reply to my email and it was not a great response either.
