Hi,

Brand new here.

Just joined to ask if anyone has converted there cameras to infra red only?

Would be interested to hear your opinions.

I have converted an old Canon 300D by removing the IR hot mirror and replacing it with clear optical glass.

This is a shy forum.

Typical Brits.

Or. Maybe no-one else has converted theirs.

I'm contemplating converting a 300d, what did it cost, did you do it yourself? and can you show us some example images?

I converted my 1000d to IR, have removed both filters from the sensor so it gets the full spectrum.

I've been considering converting my Nikon D60. Can I ask you guys that have had the work done how much it cost you?

I converted mine at home, i did have a hicup first time round as something went wrong with the camera when i rebuilt it. So bought a cheap 1000d and did some swapping of bits to get a working camera.

ACS were about £300 and got it spot on.

Protech were abit cheaper and got the focus adjustment wildly off the first time, although they sorted it out after I returned it.

If i was going to convert another i'd make sure it had live view, as well as the ability to set a custom mono JPEG setting - I always shoot RAW, but wish I could use the LCD to preview the image more like it will turn out after i've postprocess the RAW file. My D200 only has the option of "monochrome".

Thanks for that chaps. Can't afford it right now but it's certainly on my 'things to do' list.

I won a faulty Canon 300d on eBay for just £25 with a few bent compact flash pins.

I found this guide to learn how to open the camera:

After I got the camera functioning properly, I though why not try the conversion.

So far so good and I followed the exact instructions at the above link.

I have the IR 67mm lens filters at 720, 850 and 950nm wavelengths.

My results have been a bit strange, most deep red from the 720 filter and deep purple from the 850 and 950. I am guessing that I should convert them to black and white to get clean results.

Oh, and I do recommend liveview. My camera just seems a bit dumb when it is blinded by a IR filter.

Perhaps post some of your images and technical details to accompany.
I will start when I get home to my images later on.

Thanks.
