has anyone tried using industrial led lights for photography,I noticed you can get them up to 300w with high lumen stats.
I need to light a boxing ring and photograph some sparring, was just wondering if anyone had any joy using/adapting these type of lights that you might find in a warehouse etc.
:)

That's a very loud no.
Security lights are designed to produce a high level of light, as cheaply as possible.
The colour temperature of the light is almost irrelevant as it can be changed in PP, but there's a major problem with the colour rendition index, which needs to be as close as possible to 100. LED security lights tend to be no better than 60 or so, which creates a strong green cast. The green cast can be corrected up to a point, but tte real problem isn't with the added green, it's with the missing magenta, which creates totally false colours.

Garry beat me to it but I was going to say that you might struggle with white balance, this article gives quite a illustration of the spectrum of white LEDs and as you can see there is a strong blue peak which often makes LED lit scenes have blue looking highlights. Because of weight and battery life LEDs are popular in cave photography but the blue is a recognized problem

I do use a couple of led bike lights to light video sometimes (through a brolly or diffuser ). Works great. In mono :)

Well, it's usable in mono because most of the problems are associated with the false colour created by the discontinuous colour spectrum of LED lights

Kind of beat me to it...

Boxing suits a gritty B&W type of treatment (it also helps w/ the high ISO requirement). And if that's where you go, then the LED's may be suitable.
BUT, even a "high lumen output" LED is crap output compared to an average speedlight (around 500,000+ lms).

thanks guys for your help,I edit mainly in black and white for these shots as the gym looks pretty cool that way,I'm hoping at the very least it will allow me to drop my ISO to something like 800.
THANKS AGAIN!!!!!!
