Inconsistent white balance between different Canon 5D mk3 bodies

Hello,

I'm shooting with two different Canon 5D mk3 bodies, with identical manual settings, both with white balance set at 5200k. I'm using the exact same lens (switching from one body to the other). The exposure is consistent between the two cameras however the white balance is not. One camera is capturing images with more of a 'red' hue than the other. Does one of the cameras have an issue..? This shouldn't be happening right?

I know I can fix the discrepency in post with software, but I'd really like to get the white balance consistent between the two cameras. If anyone could shed some light on this issue & maybe suggest a work around that would be most appreciated.

Many thanks,
Marc

Hi and welcome to TP :)

I used to have that body and as far as I can recall it was possible to setup a custom WB.....perhaps that is your best option rather than reply on the 'cooked in' one @ 5200k

As I said I think I recall that was a feature of that (and other higher end Canon bodies)

Hopefully there will other TP members along in due course to advise better than me

Thank you :)

Yes you are correct there is a custom WB setting. I will try this next. Thanks for the suggestions.

Is it possible that there is a batch variance if they were made a few years apart?

Translated : Take a bad picture on purpose and fix later on computer..
Raw files are bad pictures? The problem the op has is having two separate systems trying to do the same thing but doing it slightly differently. I am suggesting using one system to do the job which is likely to produce consistency.

Yep, custom white balance is the way forward if you are looking to minimise (and increase consistency between the two bodies) easier in post processing. If you shoot at a grey card or similar it should help balance out. If done under very controlled conditions you could work out what the approximate offset is too which will make it easier to adjust if for whatever reason you shoot on a non-AWB setting and need to make fast processing on a batch of images in post.

Whilst you have the WB settings both at 5200k. Has one camera got a picture style setting turned on I.e. Portrait or Landscape?

Are they both on the same firmware and have you done a reset to factory settings to see if this resolves?

if yes to all then batch processing through ACR or similar might be your only option.

I actually did exactly this today after someone else suggested this to me; checked the picture style and turns out one camera had it set to portrait, the other default. I also reset to factory settings and this resolved the issue, the white balance is now consistent.

There's still a bit of a light colour shift when I use two different lenses (same model of lens, but one is older than the other). I will try the custom white balance, and see if that fixes the difference.

Glad it worked and sorted the majority of the issue
