I've been going through more and more of the old photographs recently - both to clear some space on my hard disk but also to see how I've developed personally.

I've really enjoyed my photography during the last 12 months so much so I've invested a lot of money in new kit and recently purchased my first 1D series body.

What I am looking to do now is spread my wings from the usual motorsport photography I usually take and snap shot when out on a weekend. I am hoping this thread will be as interactive as possible and turn into a mini tutorial/52 week challenge with input from you and me to help develop everyone's skills.

I am looking for topics, styles and techniques to work towards over the next 52 weeks, starting the first week of 2010 so over the next few remaining weeks of 2009 I would like suggestions as to where I can go with my photography, different techniques that I could try and some different topics.

All ideas gratefully appreciated,

DB

Have you thought about joining the regular 52ers? Each week a theme is posted in Competitions, Challenges and Inspiration. So that would give you your topic at least. You could then chosse how to interpret it by getting out of your comfort zone. Believe me you'll get loads of feedback and advice.

If you doubt it, check out my 52 links below.

Hope you decide to join us as we are a very friendly and helpful lot

Cheers for the heads-up Bruja - I'll check it out!!!

DB, I'll vote for doing the 52's with the set theme also, it can be really tough, but it's good nonetheless

Cheers for the advice! Going to get my thinking cap on for the first topic and do my best to make it through a whole 52 weeks, on time and on topic!

I like the rules some have put on themselves but am a firm believer 'rules are meant for breaking' so will see how I get on.

Curves, in particular the 'Curves of Birmingham'

A Triptych of three of the most famous curves in Birmingham - The Rotunda, The Bullring and the revisiting Birmingham Wheel, back in the city till June 2010.

C&C appreciated although it's a bit of a cop out with just small parts of each image.

I really like the second, the contrast between the roof and the sky makes it for me!

Have to agree. Think the bullring picture would have been stronger on its own, It's a fabulous piece of architecture,

Hey impspeed, congrats on taking part in 52's im trying it as well so should be tough but good!! great set of shots there, second is the best, would love to see the full image!! Great start :D

David,

All three together look simply awesome. The crops and blue sky make it look somewhere much more sunny - like Sydney!

Best of luck with your 52.

Cheers for he comments - I decided than rather take one shot of the Bullring, a bit of a cop out for the first week, I would try and encompass three curves of Birmingham and use a Tryptich from the Lightroom Print module.

These photos are pretty much Snap Shots alltied together by a common theme and hopefully fit the topic well.

There are a few good photos of the Bullring which probably would've fitted the theme a bit better, with the curved walkway over from the car park, but I may revisit the topic when work becomes a little less busy, I can afford to take a lunch break and when the weather gets a little better.

All these photos were taken last Friday.

Really like the second shot (I know technically it's one picture)

Best of luck with your 52.

I guess I can get on and comment on others 'Week 1' work now. I promised myself I wouldn't peek at each topic before I've posted my attempt.

no 2 for me as well - lovely perspective and colour :)

We're on to week three already and I've not even posted a week two image!!!

I went away to Bath for the weekend with my Girlfriend and what a wonderful, inspirational city - full of architectural delights and an incredible history. En-route we stopped off at Dyrham Park, a National Trust property just outside of the city, and went for a walk around the grounds and the deer park as the house was not open.

One of the main statues in the grounds, atop a hill and overlooking the house, is the statue of Neptune (or Poseidon) where originally a large fountain had stood, second highest to that at Chatsworth.

Anyway, onto the poem;

NEPTUNE GOD OF THE SEA

An Olympian God like no other
God of the sea, guards ocean portal
Cronus his father, Rhea his mother
He can never age and is immortal

Cronus sent all his offspring to Hades
Always in fear he would be overthown
Rhea sent Neptune to Rhodes by the sea
Hidden from his father, his fate unknown

Gods taught Neptune his mystical power
This God of Atlantis would rule the sea
Gigantic in stature he would tower
Helped by Zeus, set his sibblings free

Clash with the Titans lasted ten years
Zeus, Neptune victorious they became
Protector of fishermen, he appears
Poseidon was to be his other name

His magical powers made oceans swell
Fires powerful bolts from each hand.
Can be invisible so no one can tell
Transport himself in dimensions overland

Made by the cyclopes, a trident to hold
Water pressure raised with white caps
It helps him make tidal waves to behold.
Make fog and storms, move ships in a snap

Healer of humans and amphipious
Tranform beings into other shapes
This powerful God from Mount Olympus
Turned stallion to seahorse on the cape

The history of Neptune comes mainly from Roman times, when they associated Poseidon with the planet Neptune. He is also said not only to control the sea's but also Earthquakes - being somewhat unpredictable and violent - somewhat apt considering recent events..

Well, late posting up the image from Week 2, no image yet for week 3 and lots of ideas for week 4...

Need to get priorities sorted - finish work and concentrate more on my 52 ;)

Dave, I like the Poem, and I like the image to go with it, although I'm not sure the image shouts Neptune. I can't tell from the image what the statue is sorry.

It was a cop-out, I'll admit it.

Hopefully something a bit more creative this week!!

I really like your "curves" one but "poetry" doesn't do much for me - it's not obvious who the statue is. Better lighting and a much closer view might help.
But sometimes with a "52" you just have to take what you can get - welcome to the fun!
