My new imac has just arrived I also have lightroom 6 to install, my question is do I start to import my pictures straight to the apple computer or would you install LR6 and try to import straight into this?.sorry if this sems a bit of a daft question but I am a mac and lightroom virgin and will probably need a few more daft questions answering before long. Cheers.

I am also a Mac user… but
I'm so reluctant to use or recommend LR and so

adverse to using libraries or catalogues that I may not be the right source for you!

Nevertheless, good luck and congrats for your new machine!

If you are going to use Lightroom, it would be best to import, via that program. If you import to the Mac hard drive, you'll need to, at some stage inform LR where you images are.

Also, best to save your images, on an external hd or similar. The rationale being that if your mac crashes you could, potentially, lose all your images. Also advisable to do a backup, of your LR catalog and images, to another location.

Don't worry, it'll make sense, once you start. But if not, come back to TP, for advice.

I always import to an external hard drive folder, then I import to Lightroom.i like to know I've got the originals safely in place first

I used to use a windows base computer i have not used Lightroom before,i have used cs4 and elements 7 i have a my important pictures stored on dvds and computer hard drives I will need to purchase a external hard drive when funds allow.hopefully soon.

You don't mention how many images or how many GB's you have is the iMac 1 TB drive fusion maybe

I ask as if your images in total are only a couple hundred mbs you could for starters put them on your internal drive if you use appletv as I do don't put them in the photos folder it's frustrating when you want to view on the TV

I put my images on my drive in one place installed LR then when you open LR it asks you if you want to import for me I say no then go into LR preferences tell it where you want images stored for me I put the storage in a folder in documents this will then be where your back ups are stored, I then dragged my image folder into the new folder at that point I asked LR to import from my location

I would recommend an external backup and when funds allow a time machine back up can be very useful when the OS X needs updating in case of corruption

I import straight into LR, prefer not to let Photos do the import or LR won't find them (for me anyway). I have an external drive permanently attached for Time Machine backups.

Get Lightroom installed, then you'll not be needing the built-in Photos or Image Capture applications. Import directly into Lightroom.
Make sure you have a backup regime in place too.

Shout if you have any questions. Ex Genius here :)

Thanks for all your tips etc, lightroom installed and some photos transferred getting to grips with basics of lightroom, purchased lightroom guide book from tony Northrop which has 14 hrs of video tips online, so will be a genius myself soon lol.
