Images loading at 72dpi?!

Hi all,

I've got a Canon 450d, and I run CS2.

When I load my pix up from my card and open them in Photoshop, they are heyuage, but are at 72dpi?

How do I adjust this to get them to automatically load at 300dpi?

I'm shooting on the L-curve setting. I can't open RAW files at the moment so don't shoot in RAW (this is another project entirely).

I'd appreciate any help anyone could give me.

If i change the Dpi to 300 the print size is reduced from say 33'' to 9''.

I not sure how it works but im sure someone who does will be able to
explain.

72dpi is standard for viewing on the monitor, change it to 300dpi when you send them off for printing.

Thats why the print size goes down. you can't really print at 72dpi, it will be pixelated.

The dpi is only for printing.
Your camera just loads the pixel data, it does not load at 72dpi, 300dpi, or any other dpi.

The picture data may be, for example, 3000 pixels by 2000 pixels, if you want a picture that is 10 inches wide then you need to print at 300 pixels per inch, or 300ppi (or confusingly dpi in some software) as 3000 pixels/10 inches = 300ppi.

The software just puts a default figure in the ppi/dpi box. A lot of software still put 72ppi/dpi as this used to be the standard monitor pixel resolution, therefore it gave an idea of the size the image would be on that standard monitor. Other software may stick 300 ppi/dpi in the box.

Nowadays monitors have different resolutions and different pixel sizes so ignore the dpi/ppi figure for everything except printing.

The above ignores resampling, this can reduce or increase the number of pixels in the picture data and would allow you to print, for example, a 3000 pixel picture 20 inches wide at 300ppi/dpi.
