image stabalizer mode 1 and 2

Hi all, I just bought the Canon 70-300 IS USM lens and I notice the mode 1 and 2 on it for image stabilization. I have never owned a lens that had that option before and was wondering if someone would explain the difference between the two

Cannot remember which is which but one is for tripod use, the other for normal use. The tripod one allows you to pan without the IS coming into effect and causing problems.

Not quite correct...

Neither IS mode should be used with a tripod...

Setting 1 is normal IS for everyday use...

Setting 2 is for panning shots left to right.....

Unless its the newer IS II which auto detects if its on a tripod and switches itself off, so it can be left on.
