I'm not sure you are going wrong, sometimes it's just a tradeoff between filesize v image quality. If you just can't get your image to look right at the accepted sizes, post it to your own webspace or gallery and supply a link to it.

What I do for forum shots is first of all resize the pic to 800 pixels on the longest side. Then 'Save As' a jpeg and you get a quality/compression slider. I adjust the compression till the file size is just under 160K and then save.

Thats what I do also, but sometimes the file ends up bigger than what photoshop says its going to be, quite puzzling:thinking: .

When you use "Save As", it also saves the EXIF information, which equates to an extra 20k or so (roughly). :)

What I do, is resize to 800 pixels, then click "Save for Web", and next to the cancel button is a flyout menu. On there is "Optimize to File Size", I click that and enter 160k, and it strips out the exif, and applies the right level of jpeg compression to get the required file size :)

Thanks Marcel, knew it would be something simple, almost a Matty style mistake  .

i can see the term 'doing a matty' earning some infraction points...
