Hey peeps,

someones gonna slap me for not finding an already existent thread I suppose but I just cant seem to find what Im looking for

I am aware that at the top of the PP & Image Editing thread list there is a list of available software; however for some time now Ive been after a way to better go through my images post shoot in a "reviewing process"

Ive seen it done on Lightroom by doing one sweep and marking any potentials with one star...filtering the one stars and doing a second sweep adding another star amd so on and so forth

I saw it done on Adobe Bridge yesterday just by a "select" option.

The problem is the Mrs wont release funds for any software atm, and of all the free programs I`ve used I`ve never seen a "star rating" or "Select" feature.

I currently use Faststone, and have previously used Xn View and just the windows interface (I notice it has stars but cant activate them?)

So what Im really after is free software with a feature like this.

Im sure one of your wise heads will have the answer. Im also relatively sure Its a very simple one.

Thanks in advance

Derek

ooooooo! maybe it wasnt such a silly question if noone has an answer! Never seen that before :-(

Thank you very much for the reply Sandy. Ive never heard of that but ill look into it

Thanks again

The star rating in Windows Explorer will only work with JPGs but it does work, as does tagging etc.

Invest in LR & PS via the Adobe Cloud Photography subs at £8 a month which is the cost of a couple of pints or coffees a month. Far better investment imo.

I didnt realise it was as cheap as that Sharky. Ill go start negotiations with my better half.....

Nikon ViewNX2 has star rating (5 choices) and colour labelling (9 choices). It's free but it won't read .ARW files - you'd have to shoot JPEGs at the same time.

Thanks Ozei,

I shoot Raw/Jpeg and tbh only use the Raw files atm if I need to tweak my exposure etc. as much as id love to have better and simpler control over the raw file. Ill check it out ( Although Mrs. L seems on the cusp of parting with £8.78 a month for Adobe Cloud)

Ive previously trialed LR4, Would I still get a free trial of LR?

Cloud (Photoshop & Lightroom) are good but Lightroom uses catalogues. ViewNX2 doesn't so there's no risk of losing your rating info.

I use ViewNX2 for reviewing & rating and Photoshop for editing.

Digikam let's you organise, view, flag, star and tag all your photos. It also has geotagging, face recognition, Raw support, version editing, exif editing in the file or in the catalogue. And it's free. Digikam.org
