Can someone tell me what resolution you need when viewing a CD of images on a TV.

That would depend on the resolution of the TV!

Yes, I know they are all different but there must be some sort of average.

I was thinking of 1024x768 which would be a good average size on most monitors/laptops for viewing.

If you make the images bigger than the TV res would it automatically resize the image to fit?

1024x768 is just about perfect, if my way of calculating is right. My HD tv shows normal broadcasts at 576i which is very roughly half 1080, if 1080 needs ~1920x1200 then 1024x768 is about right for 576.

Standard HDTV resolution, used by Full HD and HD ready 1080p TV displays such as high-end LCD, Plasma and rear projection TVs, PAL is at 25 FPS
So The 1080i25 or 1080i50 notation identifies interlaced scanning format with 25 frames (50 fields) per second, each frame being 1,920 pixels wide and 1,080 pixels high.

Thank's for the replies.

The CD is for a freind and I know he has a 'HD TV' so 1024 should be ok then.

Only other question is.....I would prefer to use 1024 for 'landcsape' type shot's which is ok but would prefer to use 1024 (High) for 'portrait' type shot's as well which should also be ok on 'HD'

But what about playing these on a smaller TV, wil they be resized by the TV and play ok?

yes the TV will show it, just think when you watch TV what your watching dose not know its size.
This will tell you that pixel do not mater as much as some think, Its all about viewing distance, the TV with say a 20ins screen is showing the same image as say a 50ins screen yet to our eye both look good.
Both screen will be showing the same image but we are looking at it from different distances.

Personally I think 1024x768 is a bit of a silly size, it's not going to fit the dimensions of his TV... No matter what TV he has it will have to be fiddled with by the TV. 1024 will mean the TV (whichever resolution he has) will have to stretch to 1080 or shrink to 720/SD size.

I'd go for 1280x720 (or as max resolution on one side) or even 1920x1080 if you know he has a proper HD TV. Give the TV a resolution it is optimised to use.
