Right Basically...Im stuck i dont no whether to go for a

Canon 450D

Or..

Nikon D60

?

Please help me to make up my mind:)

Bearing in mind i do like close up photography..

Thanks,dave0493

i use canon stuff. i like canon stuff, understand it all and find it suits my needs and it does what i want. i do fancy trying nikon, especially for higher iso's which are supposed to be superb, but there is no way i'm jumping ship at this stage as the financial loss would be crippling. if i won the lottery, i'd buy a bunch of nikon gear so i could have both, but that ain't gonna happen.

that's probably not much help to you, so i'd suggest going to a good camera shop and get your hands on both and see which suits your needs best....

This is going to turn into another Nikon v Canon thread :)

If you are interested in the D60 I have just found it for £379.99 from www.buyacamera.co.uk from the UK.

PLUS

Nikon has just started a NEW cashback offer of £60 on the D60 (although it still shows the £40 offer on buy a camera's site). This will give you a final price of £319.99+postage for the VR model !!!!

http://www.nikon.co.uk/sites/cashback/summer2008_buy.html

Also for anyone else after a bargain buyacamera has the D40 @ £279.99 with Nikon's cashback of £40 on that camera would make it £239.99 !!!

ALSO the cashback offer increases to £90 if you get a second lens OR flash so effectively they are offering a £30 discount off either bought with the camera. Buyacamera has the SB600 @ 139 so with the cashback this would be £109

or £429 in total for the D60 + VR lens + SB600 flash.

Vote for canon, i have to disagree, i've always believed that when it comes to beginer lever D-SLR's like the 450d, the canon have been notoriously better for noise.

Also bear in mind what lenses you're looking for first :)

Doesn't matter what anyone here says, both have pluses and minuses and are essentially as good as each other. Go and try holding both and see what feels "right". It's far more important that you feel comfortable with the camera than buying one just because someone on an internet forum says you should buy what suits them

It might be worth pushing the boat out and trying for a D80 but if you go down the Canon route it might well still be worth looking at buyacamera. I think Canon has a cashback offer on at the moment too.

Which ever you buy I am sure you will be happy with it. We have gone all Nikon because of the lenses that I wanted but there is really very little to split them up.

My advice would be to have a look for the best prices you can find, check out the cash back offers and go into Jessops or whoever and check out both cameras. You might prefer one over the offer on feel etc.

Yes, I held both today..Im not so sure of the Canons size it feels big and slightly uncomfy. :(

But i was just wondering if it would be worth sacrifising a little comfort for a better camera.

But i did superbly enjoy holding the Nikon :)

Thanks guys..dave0493:thumbs:

It comes with 18-55mm kit lens

Yes, the D60 is available with either the normal kit lens OR the VR lens. The VR lens is normally about £50-60 more expensive so the price of £379 (at buyacamera) with the VR lens is remarkable. Jessops are doing it at £419 but you do get a free bag

Most people use one as a protective shield against scratches to the lens. Ie fit it and if something hits the lens then the cheap filter is damaged rather than the glass of the lens itself. I think it is supposed to stop some kind of flare or similar but can't really say that I have noticed any real difference.

Yrs ok when i was a novice (and still am), doing 35mm pratika photography I used a UV (Ultra Violet) filter in real sunny shots or high altitude or snowy areas..... im assuming it's still the same these days

This is in danger of degenerating into a Canon vs Nikon thread. Let's see if we can rise above that. Here are some suggestions.

1. If your dad / girlfriend / best mate has one, get the same brand. You'll be able to borrow lenses from them.

2. Don't worry about the odd £20 or £50 difference in the initial purchase price. This is potentially an expensive hobby and one day when you're contemplating paying £500 or more for a lens that initial saving will be pretty irrelevant.

3. Go into a shop and try them in your hands. See which feels more comfortable. See which interface seems more intuitive. (It's a personal thing. I gather most people find the Nikon interface more intuitive, but I think Canon's is.)

4. If you want to take photos of wildlife, birds, aircraft, etc., then bias your choice a bit towards Canon. They offer far more options for quality telephoto lenses.

5. If you want to take portrait photos, then bias your choice a bit towards Nikon. Their flash system is more intuitive and more functional.

Does anyone have any other simple guidelines to add to this?

A very good point to consider,I say that as a dedicated Nikon user.

:agree:

Completely :)

If you are out shooting for a whole day then comfort is important.

If after 6 hours your hand feels uncomfortable, you won't be taking good shots anyway.

Buy what you can afford that feels right.

I've just bought a 450D and I've never made a mistake in my life!! ;)

Just something to add, and I don't know the specs of Nikons very well, but I think you mentioned "close up" photography. In which case, a camera with "Live View" may be the best bet. I don't know if it's available on the Nikon, but I'm sure it is on the 450.

Just a thought.....

Steve
