Got a phone call this morning telling me work (school) closed due to the snow here in Manchester !! YIPPPPPEEEEE !!!

What better way to spend my day than capturing some shots of the snow ?

One problem - I am unable to adjust my exposure compensation.

Using a 40D. Got the on switch set to highest position. AV Mode. Pressing the +/- button and adjusting the compensation, but when it takes the shot, the slider returns to the middle and a quick press of the info button reveals no compensation has been added.

What am I doing wrong folks ?

Cheers

I thought it was the big thumb wheel that you rotated to adjust exposure compensation? (well it is on my 5dm2 & 20d)

Yes, sorry - pressing the +/- button, then using the big thumb wheel. I can see the sliders moving, but then it seems to reset itself as it takes the shot.

Eg, took one shot at f/5.6 3 secs. Applied positive compensation - no difference. Applied negative compensation, no difference. My understanding is that in AV mode the exposure compensation adjusts the shutter speed - is this correct ?

this is not happening when adjusting it - do i need to press another button to somehow SET it ? Hope this makes sense!!

Anth.

If the wheel at the back is not working then half press the shutter to get an exposure, then adjust the wheel.

Use 'M' mode, it's better than using the compensation!

You could just set it to manual and dial in the settings you get from Av/Tv mode and then adjust the shutter or aperture to add a stop of light, then you can shoot full manual all the time

Nope - tried that! The sliders are moving, indicating that exposure compensation is occurring, but then they seem to reset themselves as I take the shot. The info shows no difference between shots with or without compensation!

The snow will be melted by the time I figure this one out!!!! :(

Yeah, considered using M mode - that's not a problem - but just wondered why my compensation didn't seem to be working.

I've got a 40D, isn't the +/- on the top button just set flash compensation.
To set exposure comp, just turn the large rear dial & watch the exposure comp scale, works on mine :)
You need the on switch to be all the way around too

Are you remembering to press the okay button after you've dialed in the compensation?

Bob

Aha - sorted!

Thank you everyone for your help.

What my problem was is that I was incorrectly using the top button. I had also got my big thumb wheel set for the focus points instead of exposure compensation!

Next question ..... where did I leave my wellies ????

Thanks again.

;)

As you have discovered, the +/- is for adjusting flash compensation. The default for adjusting exposure compensation on the 40D is to half press the shutter, and then dial in the compensation using the big wheel on the back.

Back in!

Cheers for the help once again - and yes Scarecrow - I am considering this a lesson learned!

Off to dry out and have a bacon sarnie before going back out sledging / snowman building with my son !

Happy happy days!!!
