First you need to decided which route to go down, Nikon or Canon are the most popular but there are others, by visiting a camera shop and handling the different makes and models and seeing which feels best in your hands and the best button placement for you.

Then I'd suggest looking at the classified on here for a second hand Nikanon but before buying, read/watch online reviews and decide if it will suit your needs from there.

There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to telling someone what to buy, it's a personal choice as to what feels right for you.

If you need any further help with your search, just post on here again and I am sure people can answer any questions you have on certain models.

I hope that helps! :)

Hi Casey

Welcome to TP

To be honest you wont get much for £200 you may get a cheap body and kit lens if your lucky, buy and build when you can

as for suggested above by Scott, Not sure you can access the Classified section until you reach the forum requirements

I would say spend a couple of months in here looking at and commenting on photo's, asking questions about cameras, and then in a little while you'll have access to the classifieds on here and you maybe able to find something to fit what you want

Welcome to TP

Matt

thank you very much guys, that help me alot!! :D

do you have a camera like a point and shoot, they are OK, just snap away and share your shots, build your kit as you go

Why not take part in our annual TP Day coming up soon 9th September, Where you take a photo on that day and post it on the forum, then all the Photos are made into a slideshow, Click the logo for more details, it's lots of fun to be a part of it  all photos are good DSLR P&S Phone pic, just join in its fun

That is true, I'd forgotten, sorry.

I'm not as familiar with Canon's numbering system, but you should be able to pick up a used Nikon D40, D40x or D60 for under £200 (with lens and battery).

Disagree. You can get a good camera for £200, more than good enough to start with and beyond that.
When starting out there is nothing wrong with a kit lens and there are many slightly older cameras with kit lenses for around £200.

As Canon was mention you can get nnnD range or could go older still and get something like a 20d with a couple of lenses. What more do you need?

Take a look on eBay for some options (you can use advanced search and tick completed items box to see prices)

You made my quote smaller I said "you may get a cheap body and kit lens if your lucky, buy and build when you can" so why take it out of context and disagree?

Sorry, nothing sinister, I thought that was the key part.

Basically saying that there are lots of option for £200 and they are plenty good enough for starting and beyond. No luck involved and no definite need to buy and build.
It is possible to take great shots and be happy using low end stuff (realise that is an alien concept to most :) )

Aye no luck really your right there, just a case of hunting around, OP will though want to build their kit up, with lens, filters, cable release, tripod, bag, they arent going to get all that with £200, but will as said get a camera and lens to start off with

My friendly camera shop let me have a 400D for £140. It was a trade in and they were happy to let me have for what they paid. You may have to poke about a bit but deals are out there! Good luck:)

Thank you all very much for your advise! Modchild that looks graet i will defo have a look in to it!

I will start off small and build my kit up :)

Is there any canons anyone would say to stay away from?? also does it matter how old the camera is??

It's more important how it's been looked after once it's second hand.

Some people can wreck a camera in a year, I have a 300d from new which is like new. Mostly because it's been a backup since it was about a year old. It's probably shot about 200 frames in the last 6 years. I'll never sell it, because it's worth more to me in that state to anyone else.

You can probably get a 350d and lens, if you can find a clean 20d it's a much better camera ergonomically.

Good luck though.

I managed to get a used Canon 450D with kit lens for £210 a few months back and that is a good enough starter camera.
