hi there
welcome to the forums
I have a 40D and it is a nice camera
there are better now of course but mine is still going strong and I don't regret the purchase.

you can get them on ebay, but check the condition, dirt gets in the optics of course and there can be wear and tear around the edges.
make sure all the switches are functional and get a shutter count. mine has done 76k without skipping a beat, so easily they could be in their 100k's 2nd hand now

TP forums has a 2nd hand section so check in there when you qualify to see it. I think it's to do with postcount.
There are often 40Ds in the canon for sale section

tbh any canon x0D will do a nice job. the 50D is similar and the 60D is out now.
the 40D is nice because it has the wheel and joystick on the back which I think the 60D may lack, can't recall tbh.

as for lens....well what lens? what do you shoot? the most common lens on these is the 17-55 IS lens nowadays.
but you don't have to buy with a lens in the kit.
they will, of course, take any canon EF or EF-s lens or a compatible one
so the tamron 17-50 f2.8 is great or the 50mm f1.8 etc
for a decent price I personally loved my 28-105mm USM. no special reason. I just really got on with the lens.
good luck in your hunt

Not sure what you're thinking as a great price. MPB has a bunch of second hand 40D's starting from £299 and lenses from around £70 upwards. They will give you some warranty with your purchase which you wont get with ebay or a person to person sale. The classifieds on here are generally very trustworthy and the sellers are fair, but you wont be able to go there for a while yet.

Crumbs I was thinking of selling my 40D when upgrading to a better camera but that seems like such a low price I'm not sure if it's worth the hassle. Might just keep it as a back up at this rate!

It is worse than that - they sell on eBay for around £200 (take off for £20 fee and you have £180)

I'v been on the lookout for a second-hand 40D on the bay and never seen a working one go that cheap, maybe if the shutter count was 100,000 +

Right now they're going for £280- £300 for what looks like a decent one..

Probably someone daft enough not to put a reserve, the one I have for sale on here will if it goes on the bay have a decent reserve,at £200 I'll keep it as a spare

That was just the first one in the list, there are many more just this week.

No point putting a reserve of say £250 on if it doesn't sell, just wasting money on the listing each time.

I've just bought a very low mileage 40D on here for a fair price and I cannot believe what a fantastic camera it is for the money. Although you can sometimes get a bargain on ebay, unless you are very sure about what you are getting, I'd head to MPB or Ffordes perhaps and be prepared to pay a little more for the peace of mind of a guarantee.

Try av forums they have a classified section and have a sub forum for cameras, I got my 450d from there a few months ago. They don't have minimum post count/time constraints so you can go there today.

RIGHT - THATS TWICE THIS THREAD HAS HAD TO HAVE INTERVENTION FROM MODERATORS RE: OFF CLASSIFIEDS TRADING. NO MORE... ANYONE ELSE REPORTED FROM THIS POINT WILL NOT GET A YELLOW CARD. UNDERSTOOD ?

James - we don't allow people to trade in the classifieds until they've shown themselved to be a valuable member of the community. By this, we mean spending at least 60 days as a member, making a minimum of 25 useful and helpful posts, and generally just not making a nuisance of themselves or showing that they're just here to trade. We're not a cut-price ebay, the classifieds are a perk for valued members, and we intend to keep them that way. We also have rules regarding trading either off-classifieds or via PM's. If you recieve ANY offers via PM, please report them to members of staff, where we can take the appropriate action.

If you really can't wait the 60 days, then i'd definitely suggest sourcing something from one of the places suggested above - I've personally used MPB and Ffordes and found them to be very good.

Another vote for MPB (which doesnt stand for 'mooses photography business' whatever these guys tell you  ) - also mifsuds, ffords, camtech, t4 etc - loads of options
