Thanks to the powers that be, im getting a new canon 400D in around 1.5months....
I decided agaianst the standard lens since I didnt much like it. Now im not totally sure which lens to get for an all round lens.

Im think about getting the Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens.
I played with a d40 with a 17-85 or whas is 88 and I liked it so I think its the best best. But if anyone has any other suggestions please let me know.

Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 DC Macro

It does both. It's just has a minimum focusing distance of 20cm through out the zoom range. And it's bigger aperture means it preforms better in lower light than other lenses in this price range.

Another vote for the Sigma 17-70 - I love mine. Nice and sharp and great value. I guess if you've got money to waste the Canon 17-85 is maybe better (although I have seen reviews which don't agree), but personally it doesn't justify the extra cost.

yah ive been looking through the guide which is great help, its just putting my money down on something. There seems to be a lot of them around and since im here and found that place, maybe I should look for a longer lens as well.
Something like a Canon EF 75-300mm USM Ultrasonic F4.5-5.6 MK 3 AF Zoom??

Without knowing you budget I would recommend the Sigma 17-70 as your general purpose "walk about" lens. As others have already said, it's a cracking lens and great value for money - around £230. I would also buy a Canon 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 IS USM. Another great lens and a sensible price. This combo will give you a great start into SLR photography, you'll have a focal length of 17mm (reasonably wide) to 300mm (nice zoom) in 2 lenses :)

For general purpose i'd go with a Canon 28-135 or 17-85.

You can pick up a 28-135 for under 250. I got mine brand new for £220 (and just sold it for £210 haha).

Really good lens te 28-135. Has IS aswel, good range and quality aswel.

I think most people would find the 28-135 to long for a general walk about lens, I know I'd miss the wider end of a 17/18mm lens.

I found it good becuase it has that extra length, works well as a walkaround and good for slightly further away subjects.

I sold mine because I needed a wider lens. It's the only downside to the lens, that 28mm just isn't wide enough for alot of stuff.

For £250? Not likely lol.

Even used L seris lenses go for over 300.

I decided on the Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC which I managed to pick up for £120, Now im wondering if I can find a decent long lens for around £100

With a budget of £250 then that rules out the Canon 17-85 IS it's about £350, unless you can get one secondhand from a reputable source(?)

I've not used the Sigma but it seems to be getting the vote here
