But can anyone give me a hand? I really want to try to start using a flash but since it's gonna be first go at any sort of flash lighting/proper lighting at all, I'm a bit stuck.
I'm on a Nikon D40x and would like to start with the flash on camera and then progress on to using it off camera, so for the moment, wanting to use it on camera and bearing in mind I'm new to this can anyone suggest any flashes for me that'd suit me fine, budget isn't too much, but I should be able to push it - perhaps, but it's quite low infact.
And where's the best place to buy from? Make? etc.

Never used one, but do jessops still do the AFDN - about £35 for a nikon compatible flashgun? It is not "AMAZING" but for £35 it will get you started.

that will do on camera, but if you're going to want to go off camera too, consider getting one of the more expensive jessops ones that gives you manual level control (320afd???), which you can then very simply pop on top of a radio trigger.
