Here's a strange one. Bought some Smooth Pearl Ilford paper the other day, downloaded the profile for my printer and set the other stuff as instructed.

Did a test print and compared it to my Epson print and the blacks on the Ilford paper have no detail and other parts aren't too hot either.

Changed my settings back to what works on the Epson paper and ran a piece of the Ilford through and the print comes out perfect just like the Epson paper! :shrug:

I'm not all that bothered as I now know what works but I'm a little confused as to why this is happening.
 
profile that ilford supply probably puts down too much ink.

what settings did you use for each paper
 
Trying to remember (I'm at work)...

I shoot using Adobe RGB colour space in the camera. My working space on the computer is the calibrated profile and my PS soft proof is set for the Epson printer profile.

The paper is set for the best glossy photo, colour handling is controlled by printer, rendering is set to Absolute Colorimetric and the printer is set to Epson Standard and the enhance edges is off.

I found that the rendering setting is what really made a difference when using the Epson built in ICC profile.

I'm not sure if I'm doing all this colour management correcly but it seems to work and photos come out just as I see it on screen! :D

If using Epson paper then why would I need to as are the profiles not built in for their own paper? It seems to work better than if I allow photoshop to manage the colour when printing.

I would have though with the Ilford paper that photoshop managing the colour via the Ilford ICC profile would have given the best output but as said it didn't. It's all very strange :lol:
 
I had the same problem with my Canon Pro9500/Smooth Pearl using the Ilford profile via Lightroom and CS5. Just no detail in the shadows/darker areas. The prints looked flat and very dissapointing..

Did some research and found similar complaints in various threads on the POTN forum.

When using the Pro9500 the advice was to revert to/use the Canon SP1 profile as used with Canon Photopaper Plus Glossy and set LR to Perceptual.
This made a fantastic difference - superb quality finish to the prints (in my opinion!) which also went on to win 1st and 2nd in the b/w catagory of a competition..

So looks like your findings with the Epson printer may not be too far off the mark..!

Cheers John, reassuring to hear that it's not just me! All this colour management stuff could give rocket science a run for its money hehe
 
go for what works letting the print manage colour may not put down as much ink hence better shadow detail.
