Ilford survey of film users

I seem to fit very well into just about every statistic they give... Scary!:D

"30% of respondents who were aged under 35" (y)

"with 60% of them using film for less than 5 years." (y)

"... a large percentage also being bought on EBay." (y)

"more than 49% now develop and print their own pictures in a darkroom." (y)

"Of those who responded, 98% used black and white film" (y)

"Interestingly 86% of respondents used roll film" (y)

"On-line groups and Forums are used by 90% of respondents" (y)

That's the next thing for Ilford, getting new users printing..lol

It's an interesting insight into Ilford customers, but I'd doubt that these figures are necessarily reflective of film users as a whole. In this regard, it's not terribly surprising that 98% of respondents to an Ilford survey used black and white film and that only 2% reported only using colour film exclusively...

I think that's one area of traditional photography that's going to struggle a lot more. Getting new users into film is one thing but getting them to set up a dark room and spend the time printing is another thing altogether. I think a hybrid workflow is the future of film, with users shooting film and then processing and editing on a computer to share online.

I think you are right Carl. Hopefully enough people will carry on with printing to preserve the art but it will mainly be as you suggest. It's a big investment in time, money and space to have a darkroom, I hope to one day have my own but for the moment I will just have to rely on the digital workflow and printing.
