went to the NIA today in birmingham to see the monster truck show, on entering i was subjectec to the routine bag serch, i didnt take a camera bag, just a rucksack as i had my 5 year old with me, but i had my nikon d300 with a 18-105 lens on it. On inspection of the bag i wasa told i cant take that camera in..its too big !!..i stood my ground and was taken to the desk so i could find out the reasons why its 'too big'. I checked the website before hand and there was no reference to photography at all, so i pointed that out. i saw a chappy with a 7d walk passed me, and i said 'well how come hes got in then' !!..anyway..i contiued to put my case, then a supervisor came over. Apparently..its to do with the length of the lens..so i was told..not more than 6 inches..so it was duly measured and came out under 6 inches and i was let through...i did have the last laff tghough, as i had my 70-200 f2.8 in the rucksack wrapped up in a small jacket :thumbs:
 
hahahaha.....who the hell makes these rules up!

i can only sumise that anything bigger is a good telephoto lens and can get closer !!..lol..shame they dont know that we actually dont need a big lens on..with good sensors we can happiliy crop the image. i shot on 3200 iso..lighting wernt that good in there, but i managed to use 250th sec f4
 
I have a 500mm mirror lens somewhere thats only about 6 inches long.....
 
The thing that i found annoying is that there is NO reference to photography related issues on the Website of either the NIA or the monster truck jam. There were loads taking pics, quite a number using DSLR's, so weather i had an over zealous steward im not sure, i wouldnt have taken the camera if i knew there would be an issue. These show organisers should make it plain about photography, and what can and cant be done, im aware that many music gigs do not allow cameras, personally i think this is ridiculous, we pay our money to see the event, so whats the issue, more often or not, they have thier own pro 'official' togs there anyway.

So, there IS an advantage in the 4/3rds system with its 2x crop factor! A 6" lens would have thge quivalent reach of a 12", ie 300mm lens.
 
I tend it agree with a lens length rule, I don't want to go to a concert/show and have some tog hitting me with a 500mm lens while I'm trying to watch.

I know it's becoming a comon rule in the states, allow ANY camera in the show, but just have a size rule.

Sounds very fair to me.

Can I bring my camera?

PLEASE NOTE : The promoters of the concert or event will inform the Arena of their policy regarding the admission of cameras to their shows.

It should not be assumed that any camera will be admitted, as their policy may change at short notice, and without prior notification, at the artists request.

In these cases customers will be required to leave their cameras at the confiscation area, for collection after the show.

Usually, professional type cameras (with interchangeable lenses) are not allowed in, with the exception of officially accredited photographers covering the event. Video cameras and audio recording equipment are very rarely let in, but often the Promoter will allow in small instamatic cameras. It has been known however, for all cameras to be banned at the request of the artiste.

If you are planning to attend a concert in the future and would like to bring a camera with you, we would advise you contact us first, to ascertain what the camera policy will be for that show, to avoid disappointment on the night.
 
Anyway its not all about size, its what you do with it that counts! :naughty:
