Hi all

I have read that IE10 will cease to be supported come Jan 2106, so finally decided to install IE11

Using WUP I got an error code 9C59, so then went to download the installer out of WUP but that also failed??? I read that common reason(s) are presence of IE9, that is not installed and then or prerequisite KB installs.........checked all the obligatory ones (there are a few optionals!) and I have all of them installed.

So what gives, what else can I try to install IE11.............oh this in on a W7 Pro SP1 64 bit OS

TIA for any insights :)

Can you download direct from here or does it tell you it's already installed?

https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/internet-explorer-11-for-windows-7-details.aspx

Now that link is different to others I found, they were an installer and one that was approx 56MB the latter one was described as for use offline but looking t the installer log last night it appeared to be failing with a download step!. I will check the linked one you pointed to when back on the PC but how many variations can there be?

OK using the linky Jim I get the same file for full download I already had and it still fails to install??? There is another version described as having Bing and MSN installed as defaults...........neither of which I want or require!!

FWIW I did read somewhere that having IE9 can be a problem, though it seems I had that in the past (there is an old install log) I now run IE10 (must have updated from IE9 at some point. IE9 is no longer 'there'

This is the install log and the failure all seems to be related to the "neutral download cab" file:-

The Bing and MSN are easy to remove using Internet Options.

The only other thing might be to uninstall IE10 then try IE11 again.

make sure you have all the windows updates installed.

If 'easily' removable in Internet Options then may be worth trying that installer in case it is some odd systems glitch. As for uninstalling IE10 then IE11 install................a last resort???

make sure you have all the windows updates installed.

Yes, all updates up to date with the exception of the "optional ones". Plus I have checked that all the prerequisite ones required for IE11 to install are indeed there.

Of note when I start the install and it reports a failure I have checked the temp folder and it does look like the installer has correctly unpacked all the parts so where the log says this:-

00:40.295: INFO: Launched package installation: C:\Windows\SysNative\dism.exe /online /add-package /packagepath:C:\Windows\TEMP\IE112F4.tmp\IE11-neutral.Downloaded.cab /quiet /norestart

The .cab file is there where it is supposed to be....so no idea why it reports the failure based on the path!

Maybe it checks the registry for the location of where IE11 is to be installed and it cannot be located. You have not used any registry cleaners or changed anything on the drive where Windows in installed have you?

No, not made any such changes and bearing in mind that all other updates have been OK. Having said that I had an issue a while ago where I identified one KB that was causing Windows Update problems in that it caused the catalogue of installed updates to disappear and any further updates stalled or failed, not installing that one solved the issue.

Googling reveals I am not the only one who has had such IE11 install issues and I have yet to find anyone saying explicitly "here is the answer".

However, in regard to IE11. I ran the SUR (system update readiness tool) and following that I reran the IE11 installer.............it ran longer then paused telling me I need to install the prerequisite KB's! Note above I had previously checked and they were all installed......rerunning these failed with a hang whereas before they responded in seconds to tell the update was installed ~ methinks this looks familiar re WUP catalogue.....lo & behold the catalogue was missing!!!!

Did a system restore, back to normal ~ phew :)

Tried the IE11 with Bing & MSN, that ran AOK in seconds telling me IE11 was installed..........rebooted and started IE and it took me to a default page about bing but checking the Help>About it was still IE10 ~ ain't Windows wonderful  Restored again to remove any residue left by that attempt.

Maybe try again in safe mode with networking as it does like to 'phone home' even though the download is described as for use off line?

FWIW I have found IE10 a pretty good browser but do have Chrome installed as my secondary one for use as needed..........................perhaps time I used it as my primary one and deleted IE10???

If I could get IE11 sorted out I would likely stick with it but uncommonly I cannot believe just how difficult it has been to resolve the issues associated with such a 'simple' upgrade!

Though only tangently related to this I have been keeping W10 at arms length....................I want to be darned sure (next year) that it has become much more stable before I upgrade ;) ???

Very pleased with IE11.

b****r IE, go for Chrome or Firefox (y)

Yes, I have switched to Chrome on my PC but there is another hurdle ahead. My company laptop is WinXP and I have been using Chrome as well but I have been getting a message that end of upgrades for chrome on that OS is due sometime soon. :(

Sticking with Chrome :)
I'd change to Chrome but IE has the 'send shortcut to desktop' option in the File menu - Chrome doesn't have this. The only way to do it in Chrome is un-maximize the window and drag the page icon onto the desktop - hopelessly fiddly.

As others have said, b****r IE, I tried FF but didn't like it.

However, I'd been using Chrome for years, but over the last 12 months or so I swapped to Opera, And have never looked back

I use XP on a virtual machine that I use for work but I run Firefox on that one, no messages about OS issues with it. I did stop using FF a while back due to issues but they've all seemed to have been sorted now so I just run FF on XP without any problems. At some point though, I guess mozilla will stop support for it due to its age.
