Long story short, I ordered a lens from Kerso which (due to a Royal Mail mess up) hasn't come. It's a Canon 55-250mm IS. And I am going on a one-off holiday of a lifetime type thing on Sunday.

My question is this, if I get a copy from Jessops and then return them another (brand new, unopened) lens and receipt when I get back (ie. the one from Kerso) is it:

a. Very unethical?

b. Will they be able to tell (ie. will they scan the lens and realise it's a different copy?)

I dunno what else to do. I really really wanted this lens for this trip. :(

Any other ideas welcome.

I guess the question is does the serial number show on jessops receipt.

Whay dont you rent a lens for your holiday?

Edit. I see you are going away tomorrow. No time to rent.

They may be able to tell and it's slightly on the side of iffy morals as you wouldn't want to tell them the whole story would you. On the other hand, they would be right back where they started and at no disadvantage.

If it was me, I'd go along and get the lens, then worry about it after the trip. Worst case is that you keep the jessops copy and sell the kerso one. You'll end up paying that little bit more but you'll have taken the lens with you.

why can't you return the lens to Kerso?

regarding your other question,
depends if jessops record the serial number and/or barcode on the box

I don't think anyone would want part in this.....

Are you saying you want to take the lens then replace it with a new one?

Forget it. I just won't take one. It's a bit dubious ethically anyway. Can a moderator close this please?

Just seems abit odd to me, or am i getting the wrong end of the stick? if so, exsplain it more

No, you're right. It would be unfair on Jessops - although they would not technically be losing money. My fault for leaving it so late.

I'd be amazed if Jessops didn't record the serial number of lenses, but I think you've come to the right decision - annoying though it must be. You should be able to close the thread yourself. :)

I don't understand what you mean though, do you mean that you have left it late returning a lens or what?

Or we could just leave it now? ;)

CT is here and i need to get running :D brumbrumBrumBrum

get the one from jessops and cancell the one from Kerso.. all you have to do is refuse delivery.. it'll go straight back to him..

Ok, I am going on holiday tomorrow.

I ordered a lens from Kerso (in time for it to arrive today).

It didn't turn up due to a Royal Mail mess up.

So I have no lens. I wanted to go to Jessops, pick up the lens, use it and return the one from Kerso to Jessops.

But, two problems:

a. It's not actually fair on Jessops.

b. I don't have enough money to fork out another £200 anyway.

i think theres long distance buying rights that protect you in these instances..

Ah right i see what you mean :)

It could still come to your door later today though couldn't it?

Email him and cancel it!!

Then goto jessops and buy one and have a nice trip..

Even if he's sent it back out you can refuse delivery.. Job done..

I've cancelled it.

Problem is, Jessops don't have it. One shop nearby does, but it's £220 and I can't afford that before I get the money back from buying the first lens.

Never mind - will work on my wide angle.

Hmmm....sounds a bit like sharp practice, but anyway, supposing you did (hypothetically speaking, of course) decide to do this, here are the problems I forsee...

The item you return would need to match the Canon Warranty paperwork in the box, unfortunately this will not be a UK warranty if you're buying from Kerso.

If you return the new lens in the Jessops lens box (with the UK paperwork) the numbers won't match.

I'm not sure how Canon Guarantee cards work but with Nikon the US lenses have different ones from those sold here and in some cases the boxes (again with the serial number on them) are of a different design too

Even supposing you get a totally clueless sales assistant (not an impossibility given that we're talking Jessops here) to take the lens back, unless you've paid cash they'll have your credit card details to pass onto the Police....

Sounds like a non-starter to me
