I have had my Canon 400d for about three months now.Just got the standard 18-55 kit lens Iam looking for Ideas of what to ask for this Xmas. Iam 56 now so have gone past photographing the family now and want to do a bit more in the way of landscapes. Thanks in advance.

Ask for a Nikon - any Nikon

HTH?

Seriously though, as a keen landscape chap myself your kit lens sounds about right in the focal length dept.

Are you actually new to photography? If so, go to the library and get a few landscape books out.

If an old-hand but new to digital, buy a good version of Photoshop or its equivalent (and a book on it!).

If you've already got that - spend your Xmas money on weekends away and enjoy yourself taking some pics - post them here and await the critique as an aid to improving, and if it's all 'WoW you're brill' - write a book on how you did it all with DD's advice! :D

Depends on how wealthy your family are - but for landsacpes I would consider the below a good start:

£0 - £50
Hotshoe Spirit Level (best gadget for under £10)
White Balance Filter e.g. Expo Disc
Sun Position Compass - ID where the sun will set / rise at any time of the year.
DoF Calculator

£50 - £100
A nifty fifty (50mm f1.8)
Sensor Cleaning Kit

£100 - £200
Manfrotto 190XProB Tripod + basic ball & socket head
Lee Filter digital starter set (ND and ND grad with holder, case and cloth) - £175ish (best filters for Landscapes)

£200 - £300
Sigma 10-20mm - one of the best value wide angles available
Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 - nice upgrade from your kit lens

As above i agree, the sigma 10-20mm is a good landscape lens from what i have heard

I think this thread is long dead!
