Hi guys

I have a Nikon d5100 with the kit 18-55mm, 35mm f1.8, 105mm f2.8 micro and the 55-200mm VR, with other accessories (e.g couple of bags, manfrotto tripod, yongnou flash).

I am in the fortunate position to have in a week or two to have around £300 in Heathrow shopping vouchers (I travel a *lot*), and I thought perhaps a new photography toy would be a useful use of those vouchers at the Dixons Travel. They have quite a good range of lenses and accessories, even if they are a little more expensive than other places (but not £300 more expensive).

So what would you suggest, given my budget will likely be £400 (I can put something to it)? I would prefer Nikkor glass over Tamron or Sigma, but am willing to consider most options....

I was thinking maybe:
1 the 16-85mm DX (about £400) to replace my 18-55 kit lens
2 the 18-200 DX if I want to add a bit more (to replace the 18-55 and 55-200)
3 the Sigma 10-20 HSM (but I would prefer Nikkor lenses)
4 the 24-85 FX to replace the 18-55 (maybe 24 is a bit long for a DX, but I like FX lenses for future upgrade possibilities)

Obviously it depends on what they have in stock, but as I said, it's not too bad in T5 (but they do tend to have more Nikkor glass than anything else). I am leaning towards item 1 - I was never happy with the kit lens (although it's not that bad a lens....).

The other option would be to wait around 2 years and I will have a cool £1k (or there abouts) to upgrade the body or get a very fine 24-70 f2.8. But that assumes the exchange rate of air miles to £££ remains the same (schemes rarely get better with time, I have found).

Thoughts?

16-85mm DX This is what I'm fancying next! If you're wanting a new body Nikon are offering £150 cash back on the d7000

If I were to upgrade, it would be the d800 :-) Hence the lust after FX glass (but with a d800, crop mode with DX glass is still superb). The difference just isn't enough to warrant going for a d7000 :-)

I'm sometimes guilty of buying something for something's sake when I am airside at T5 in Dixons Travel.

I guess it really depends on what you want from your lens. You haven't said. If your vouchers have no expiration date then I'd probably be tempted to save up for a bit longer and go for the Nikon 17-55 f2.8 lens. Or throw caution to the wind, hand over your vouchers and credit card and go for the D7k for the cashback!

I guess I have two reasons to upgrade the glass:

1. Upgrade the kit 18-55 with something a bit more versatile (eg the 16-85) for a walkabout lens
2. Ultra-wide to increase focal length range of existing glass, hence 10-20

Then there is also the wish to start on the long road of acquiring FX glass :-)

The vouchers/air miles have just under 2 years left on them :-)
