At the top of the page you will see a panoramic picture used as the site header. Is it possible do you think to make an educated guess as to the time of day, time of year, and weather conditions?

How would one go about capturing a similar style? I think it's a breathtaking image, at least what I can see of it, and it captures everything I want to learn with my camera.

Gary.

Winter, early morning , clear skies but with patchy cloud, To get a shot like that its going to take alot of patience and luck really just because of how still the water is, the fog/mist in the backround ...

just my thoughts

It is very nice. I'd guess early-ish morning before the mist / low cloud burns off. Basic good clear day shaping up by the looks of it. Other than that, I'll leave it to someone with some local knowledge to fill you in.

Edit: Possibly a filter of some kind to help work the reflections? Polariser / grad perhaps?

Well, I took some similar shots in the lake district around October 2006 and not too early in the morning - about 8:30-9am.

Depends on the weather but you normally get get fog/mist around october or end feb/march, but the weather is completely screwed at the moment. Basically for fog/mist you need warm days, clear nights so cold mornings.

Can you tell I ride a motorbike everyday? :D

Would love to see your shots :)

Lotus Elise & Jag XKR at weekend for me, Motorbike everyday to and from work (Suzuki Maurader 125)...don't like bikes, but cheap as chips!!.

The picture you are showing is Loch an Eilean on Rothiemurchus Estate and is very easy to get to the spot where the photographer took this shot as it right next to the car park.

Most likely there was a high pressure with a temperature inversion which caused the low cloud/mist. As the sun burns of the cloud you get short a period where pictures like you are pointing to are possible. In reality there are only a few days in a year that yield results like that.

My efforts at that location. Both hand-held:

Love the 1st !!!

Gary.

Just to add, I think we live in the best country in the world when it comes to scenery, you just can't beat the collection of Lochs, Mountains & Castles. I am only 28 and I have ignored it thus far, had my first tour of scotland two weeks ago and had a blast. Mull is next in a few weeks, and I will be doing the other islands in due course. I feel like I have just opened my eyes for the first time, and I need to get out and explore!!!

Gary.
