What is the ideal Canon or Nikon camera and lens set up for indoor portrait photography to cover both studio lighting and natural lighting portraits?

For studio portrait photography you do not necessarily need a lot of the latest features that the high end cameras have such as fast shutter speed, high ISO’s, multiple frames per second, video etc . Natural light portraits though could benefit from a faster lens.

Are you best setting for a middle of the range body and quality lens, if so what combinations do you think are best?

Have you considered the Fuji S5 Pro? By all accounts this is meant to excel at portraits (amongst other things).

i think the 5d was made for portraits, and team it with the 24-105 f4l should cover most things in a studio nicely. what camera have you got?? all will work fine in a studio with the right lens and enough space

id agree with the above, i have a fuji s5 and it definitely suits portraits.

the nikon 85mm f1.8 is also a good portrait lens or if budget allows the 85mm f1.4.

i currently use the 50mm f1.8 and my sigma 105mm f2.8 for my portraits and they do me just fine.

I currently have a canon 300D which was fine whilst I dabbled a bit to see if I wanted to get back into photography after a 20 year gap.

I now have the chance to be given a Nikon D60 as part of a long service award at work.

Whilst not the highest spec Nikon around I was wondering whether given the type of photography I tend to do whether selling the Nikon and buying a higher spec camera was worthwhile?

So if I kept the Nikon what lens to go with it?

I could just sell the lot and take the opportunity to get the ideal setup whether it be Canon , Nikon ,Fuji or other?

Keeping it cheap the 50 f1.8 is around £100. Will be manual focus on the D60 (but you will be used to that?) its top quality lens and at 75mm on the D60 is a good portrait length
