Strangefly, Kuşadası by Cagey75, on Flickr

Can anyone tell me what this long fly-type bug is? It was on a kid's slide in the playground at a hotel in Kuşadası. It was about an inch long, much longer than the typical flies we get in the UK and Ireland, and looks to have a stinger.

I wouldn't fancy these guys flying about here in summer! considering their size. But it didn't seem to mind me getting in close for a shot. Never budged.

Cheers.

It belongs to the family Asilidae - Robber Flies. Given where it is from I would not like to even take a guess at the genus!

They don't sting - it is an ovipositer. These are predatory flies which feed on other insects, generally catching them in flight by zooming out from a perch - rather like a flycatcher.
