I'd like a wide angle lens.

I've done a quick search, but can't seem to find a specific answer, so please bear with me, I'm still not very good at this photography lark.

I'd like to get a wide angle lens. I'm off to Kenya in a few weeks time and I'd like to capture landscape scenes as best as I can and I reckon a wide angle lens will be my friend.

I have a Canon 450d which came with a 18-55mm lens. My understanding of this is that it is not really a wide angle lens?

I'd like something that captures as much of the scene as possible, but I don't think I want a fish eye lens.

My budget is around the £400 mark.

For my holiday, I plan on taking my 50mm prime lens and the wide angle lens. I'm more interested in photographing people and landscape so not too fussed on animals. I'll take my bridge camera for the zoom photos on safari.
Does this sound logical? Please, any advice on what would be useful on my holiday (photography wise) would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

If your after an Ulra Wide Angle lens, the Sigma 10-20mm is worth a look, shouldn't be a problem with your budget. The Canon 10-22mm is very good, but will prob be over your budget. Some of the new Tamron / Tokina lenses are getting good reviews as well

If you are gonig to use if after your trip - a 2nd hand 10-22 which IMO is better than the sigma can be had for around £400 2nd hand or have a harambee and get one. If you are just using it for the trip, why not rent one.

You might be better trying one first, I'm not always a big fan of wide angle landscapes, they can make your scene look a bit diluted, by that I mean unless there is a point of interest quite (very) close to you then everything will look tiny.

Thank you for the replies.

I do intend to use it after the holiday too. I get out and about on my motorbike a fair bit and love taking my camera with me. I've just been unable to capture the landscape scenes I want so hence the need for a wide angle.

Andyred, is this the 10-22mm you mean? I would be able to stretch to that budget for the right lens.

Thanks andyred.

SparkUk, unfortunately I don't know anyone with a wide angle lens to have a go with. I suppose I could rent one though and see?

Decisions, decisions. :)

I would recommend the Sigma 10-20mm 3.5. It really is superb! Get a circular polariser for it as well.

I have a Canon 10-22 and love it. If you have great skies, sunsets etc it will be great. Wildlife will have to be pretty close up to feature. Of course, you could always take a series of pics and stitch them for a panorama.
