I normally buy Ilford ID-11 in 1-litre packs but recently coughed up for a 5-litre pack. This comes, as regular users will know, in powder form and two packets A and B are mixed together with water to make up a solution.

The 5-litre pack appears to contain a very small A packet, much smaller than B. It's so long since I mixed a 5-litre brew I can't remember whether the A pack is meant to be small or they've slipped a wrong'un in. Before knackering the mixture can anyone confirm either way?

What are the odds on that. I was just about to do exactly the same thing and mix up some ID-11 from the 5L box as he didn't have the 1L ones......

What's XTOL like, I'm not getting along with ID-11 and I fear Microphen is gonna go the same way, I can't do with fannying about mixing developer, and then for that developer to go absolutely nowhere, its a double negative.
I might go back to Ilfosol, LC29 and Rodinal, the 1 shots are much more economical and have no faff factor..

Thanks for the replies guys. I also received this response from the splendid Ilford people.

"Ref your ID-11 pack.
Certainly the 5L pack b's are 'large' in size, and actually probably larger than they really need to be for the powder chemistry amount in them. They are thus always alot larger than the 5L pack a's. That they are large - does tend to make them appear unbalanced and out of proportion compared to the sachet a's of the 5L sizes - in comparison to the smaller bag sizes which are more similar in size for the 1L kits.
From what you are saying though - I am still confident all are 'normal'.

As a by-the-way, we did have a recent quality issue with ID-11 - but it only involves 1L sizes. I am 100% certain your 5L pack is not linked to this.
For the 1L sizes, the quality issue was ref the ID-11 items inflating. It was a quality issue we actually announced on our website. ie we have had to recall 3 batches of ID-11 in 1L sizes (and 2 batches of Microphen 1L) - due to their sachet b's inflating slightly (a moisture contamination error issue). I have attached a link to this statement below.
Press release - as on ILFORD website - http://www.ilfordphoto.com/pressroom/article.asp?n=130

So I hope you can be reassured that your issue is purely linked to all I have mentioned above - and not to there being any wrong quantity contents, or any link to the 5L issue I also detailed above.
I wish you some great results with any films you shoot/process.
Kind regards,
Sue Evans"

Me three - I like the warning about their own cock-up without having to mention it... but then Ilford have always been a nice company to use.

I mixed up the pack yesterday (see my thread too). No problems whatsoever even though it was my first time at developing. I mixed the entire contents as it suggests and filled up a 2L PET bottle, 3 1L accordian bottles and made a 1L accordian bottle of 1+3.

Will be doing the 5L powder kit of paper developer on Thursday to do my first prints hopefully in time to get one in for the competition that finishes on the 11th.

As I remember it you should only dilute the stock solution just before you use it, as it doesn't keep very long in it's diluted form.

yep ^ stock lasts 6 months in full airtight bottles
1+1 & 1+3 mix lasts 24 hours

Didn't realise that but used about 750ml of it anyway :)
