Hey Folks,

Will be shooting both sports in the next couple of weeks, and as I've I have never done these sports am looking for some advice.

Both will be with Media access so should hopefully get ok positions.

Will Be using (I think) D300s & D700, with a choice of 50mm f1.8, 100mm f2.8, 16-35mm f4 and the 70-200mm f2.8.

Any help will be greatfully accepted.

Thanks

the 70-200 will be great for either sport
the f4 will probably be useless
the 50 1.8 will be good at basketball if you can get directly behind the basket

of course we have no idea of the lighting but it should be OK ... where are the venues as theres a few on here who cover both sports so we might know? :)

Hi Tony,

Basketball will be at the Kelvinhall in Glasgow (Scottish Rocks) and the Icehockey with be at Braehead arena with the Braehead Clan. Will leave the F4 at home (Was thinking of selling it here to fund a 24-70 anyway).

haaa wrong country :) :) I did a job at toryglen indoor football and thats my photo knowledge of scotland i am afraid :)

I've sat in the stands at the Kelvin Hall watching the basketball often enough, but I've never taken photos there. To my eye, the lighting looks pretty good, certainly compared to indoor venues where I have taken the camera. Having seen what other togs use there, I'd think the D700 with the 70-200 would be good to start with.
I hear the cheerleaders have been dropped, so that'll be one less, er, distraction...

Haven't been myself, but I have a tog how is taking photos for me at Kelvinhall - the light seems decent enough (on BBL standards). It's no ECHO arena or Plymouth.. but with a 2.8 glass you'll do fine.
At Breahead I've only been to see games.. so can't say how it is photowise.

Remember that BBL don't like tog putting pics on Forums this season.. but as you have media-access, guessing you'll be doing these for papers??

Enjoy the Rocks game - they aren't quite the team they were last season.. but they got some good new guys playing for them. And you always get few good shots of EJ !!

Rob (Sheffield Sharks tog) went up the other week to cover a game and I thought he said the light was a bit disappointing although his shots seem fine......he uses a D700 but not sure what lens.

Worst news I've heard so far this season :(

I thought you would say that.. that's why I haven't mentioned that to you...
So Rockettes aren't any more - and also the Plymouth cheerleaders seemed to have been ejected from their games...

Luckily I get some EuroBasketball during the winter to keep me going...

How could you keep that quite from me......might return my BBL licence in protest :D

Nothing about them being dropped, will try and get some images to keep you going at the next game ;D

On basketball Forum's there has been news they've are not performing at the Rocks games.. and they weren't in the last game (as far as I know).

The Rockettes are 'owned' by an American company - or at least rights to their performance..so maybe there's a part of the reason why they aren't there anymore..

But. you'll be at the game tomorrow and let us know

Oh, P-E - sorry not to let you know.. I know how much this will lessen your interest in the sport
