Hi everyone
At the moment I have a nikon d40 with 18-55 lens and 55-200 lens I have also got a sb400 flash. I am starting to get more
serious about photography and would like to buy a wide angle lens and a macro lens but as I have been looking I have found limited choice because many of the lens will not autofocus with the d40. At some point I also want a new camera body if I buy another nikon say the d90 or d300s will the equipment I already have work with it?

I am also considering changing to canon I like the look of the 50d and the canon lens seem good but it also seems a shame to move away from nikon

Many thanks
Helen

Both lenses and the flash you currently have will work fine on any other Nikon body.

If you fancy a wide angle have you considered the sigma 10-20mm? Works fine on a D40 as has the inbuilt motor. I think it's a fantastic lens.

The Tamron macro has a built in motor so will autofocus on your D40 and all these lenses will work fine on a D90 or 300s.

The sigma 10 20 wide angle also has a built in motor.

Most lenses these days have built in motors so it really isnt an issue. Nikon D90 is a brilliant camera and a big upgrade from the D40/D60. 300s is a smaller jump from the 90, and only really of benefit if you need the stronger body, better weather sealing etc....

a wide(ish) lens would be the new 35mm f1.8 which has a focus motor and the 85mm f3.5 macro which also has the focus motor.

On a crop body 35mm is hard pushed to be considered as 'wide'. I'd consider it a 'normal' lens.

For a 'wide' lens on a crop body you're looking for something that is at least 28mm preferably 24 or below. The Sigma 10-20 is proper wide and good value. I keep hearing bad things about the f/3.5 version though.

I'm not sure the 35mm would satisfy Helen's requirement for a wider lens than what she has already.

Helen, the Sigma 10-20mm suggested above is a good wide-angle choice. As for macro, for shooting stuff at near life-size there are a few options available e.g. Nikon 105mm VR Micro, but a cheaper solution would be to use extension tubes together with your existing lenses. You would lose autofocus, but manual focus is often preferred for macro anyway.
