I want to do a self portrait

Hmm, You could trial an error it, or put a subject in the position you will be standing in - focus on that then move it out of the way when its about to take the shot.
Otherwise get a remote for your camera :)

For this one i just focused on the end of the fence and ran like hell into position..

It depends on the scene. If it's a clean background the the Autofocus should pick you out without a problem (That's how I did the one for my avatar). Otherwise it may be best to prefocus manually using a stand in.

Bring out the blow-up doll!

If you're using a 50mm I've found that a good distance from the lens is about the width of both your arms outstretched - put one had on the shutter button, the other where you will position your face for the camera to focus on.

Press the button, move over into position, jobs a goodun :)

Use some lateral thinking....

Take the camera to where you'll be standing/sitting for the shot and then focus on the point where the camera will be (tripod/etc) when you take the shot. Replace camera, start timer, get into position, click, self portrait done

Or you could try tethered shooting :)

Blimey that's a good idea!

Why didn't I ever think of it  :(

If you set the self timer, does the camera not focus before the shutter goes off anyway ?

Focus, switch autofocus off, activate self-timer.

Alternatively, get someone else to take the photo. :p

thats not a SELF portraight

I didn't claim it was the perfect solution! :D

Although, some would consider the use of a human remote release acceptable as a self-portrait as long as all they did was release the shutter at your request.

Clever :) Then use a small lens aperture (high f/number) to get a bit more depth of field and give you some margin for error.

Richard.

Nope, just single shot focus. When it goes to take the shot, I can hear the atofucus motor just before the shutter fires.

Thats my experience too, and would/should make taking a self portrait pretty easy.
